ADSL Migration

Need to change ADSL company and was wondering what kind of downtime im looking at or any other details from anyone thats done this before in UK, really could do without this right now but dont have a choice with 50% packetloss to everything

Nasty lag...

I would guess its possible in less than a week, but in reality it depends on both companies involved.

I wouldnt bother changing for another ADSL company becuase majority of companies use BT lines, thus your limited in the connection speed you can get, go for CABLE instead and that gives you a wider option of ISP's togo for. If you stay on ADSL, you'll need a MAC code, BT will give out MAC codes quickly but it depends how fast the company your migrating to is at connecting you. The upgrades/connections take roughly 30 mins, 3 days to stabilise downstream/upstream and 7 days there after if your on upto 8mb ADSL to manage the max throughput and stability rate - If you need more help, just ask.

Have you raised this with your ISP support team, as it's definately a fault.

Its a possibility that it's also a fault however he is getting a DSl connection, you can get your ISP to reset the RAS profile but again, this depends upon how fast they are at doing these things, and the distance from your exchange.

If the trace he posted is representative of average traces he gets, then it's got bugger all to do with either the DSLAM or the RAS, his packet loss problem is on the transit of hop 3 to 4.

It should be a lot faster to just get them to sort it out, rather than requesting a MAC and trying to change ISP.

I don't see that as a problem at all, the zero packetloss at hop 6 implies that the earlier hops are passing data through them quite happily, they just aren't responding well to pings themselves.

The big problem is hops 7-8, whatever those servers are.

It doesn't imply that if he's regularly getting traces that look like have packet loss, as it's perfectly possible that the pings to hop 6 coincided with no loss (after all he's not loosing every packet), and the packet loss on the later hops can be occuring at 3 to 4 but will be displayed as a loss to 7 to 8 as thats what pingplotter was tracing for those samples.

Anyways, it's hard to tell exactly what's going on from just the one pingplot, was just posting what's very often the case on traces that look like that.

Either way, pushing it to his ISP as a support fault (especially if you have the threat of requesting your MAC code and leaving) should get a better result than actually trying to change ISPs at this time of year (e.g. it's not really going to happen till January even if he requests it now).

Packet loss on DSL lines might be the cause of the following issues:

- distance between you and DSLAM to far: max distance for stable line shouldn't be more then 4 km
- internal cabling issues in your house
- faulty splitter

I would first check those things somehow before switching because even if these problems may persist even if you change provider.
