3g

Well, my mobile phone contract expires in January, and I've not been all that impressed with the service from Orange (I have Nokia 6310i), although their customer service is quite good.

I think I'm going to go for a 3G phone, I just wondered if anybody here had one, or was thinking of getting one. I'm really quite intrigued by the possibility of sending pictures or videos (or voice recordings maybe) directly to an email address. Anyone know what networks these phones use when you're out of range? Will they allow connection to Voda/Orange/121 etc?

What I'd like to know is why you'd want a 3g phone?

Surely the idea of a mobile phone is just that - to ring people? If your current one does that no problem, why 'upgrade' to something that you'll rarely use (taking photos etc)?

Yeah, great you get to play games in colour! Ummm I have a PC for that. But you get to do it while on the train!!!!!!! Ummm well there are such things as laptops. You get to view football highlights!!!!! TV or internet can do that already. You can surf the internet!!!!! PC already does that, and at a much greater speed, with the ability to view more and on a larger screen.

I kinda seem them as nothing more than a gimmick. Perhaps thats just me tho.

Well, I already use my phone for much more than just talking. I use it as a modem for my Ipaq to access the internet (my job involves a lot of travel). I don't possess a laptop, nor am I ever likely to. There are also genuine applications for using the video features, such as being able to transmit from a location a particular view, to discuss with a director or series producer whether said location is viable.

The pictures function will be fantastic for me.

The prices right now are so cheap its worth investigating (they are giving some phones away with contracts).

/edit: I forgot the map functions, although I have satnav, this will still be extremely useful

My boss has got a 3G mobile and to be honest it's shit! The only way that you can do the video calls stuff is if you've got the hands free stuff plugged in, the 3G signal is patchy at best so you can only make normal audio calls, the phones themselves are fuckin ugly ad the menu system a pain and who wants to see a 312x312 video @ 2 fps that you've filmed in their inbox?

I would personally wait Tom until they develop a little bit more.

But those tariffs are so nice, like 40 quid for free calls anywhere?

I just bought the Sony Ericsson p800, kicks ass not only as a phone but PDA type thing as well, it replaced my old Nokia and palm pilot all into one thing....

superb phone, tho I would be tempted to wait until the p810/p900 is released in a few weeks.....

I'd wait a bit until the next generation of 3G phones are released. The current ones suffer from *massively* poor battery life, crash a fair bit and are huge. Also note that the video function is only available when you have a perfect signal.

Saying that however, 3 have a good deal on free minutes atm, so you could always get a 3 contract/phone and stick the SIM in your old phone :)

Considered one of these, put off by the fact you have to use the stylus for writing SMS messages ( impossible say, on the bus getting bounced around :) )

I tried to get my iPaq (2210) to talk to a friend's '3'phone (Siemens thing... very bulky). I had no joy whatsoever. She said that it can't connect to her Bluetooth PDA either.

It's probably worth waiting for the next generation.
