Impressed £67.5 billion... nope... 263 billion, and rising.

No what will happen is the government will have to stump up more money for the next reactors.

I also don't need your house as I don't need a abattoir with an attached lake :p

Or, we just say, no, fuck off. All contracts signed under a Tory government should be scrapped. If they don't like it, then they can invade.

The French finance minister, Bruno Le Maire, said this week it would be “fair” for Britain to share the burden of the extra costs.
It's coming, mark my words. And nearly 50bn for a single reactor.

And we're footing decomissioning and "dealing" with the waste.

AND:

While UK bill payers are insulated from the cost overruns at Hinkley, they will be exposed to equivalent risks at Sizewell, which has a different funding model

Fun times.

Meanwhile: Sellafield.

As said previously, we won't be helping EDF on the current reactor.

Whilst you're ignoring the lion's share of the cost (decomissioning and waste) - I said previously, we will. To requote the French finance minister:

The French finance minister, Bruno Le Maire, said this week it would be “fair” for Britain to share the burden of the extra costs.

Of course, politically, we'll likely pay somewhere else. Just for the optics of it. But we'll still pay. And we're paying them a fuckton already.

A good read, kind of applies to many of our large infrastructure projects:

"In fact, it's probably too safe"...

...what a great argument that's being made there.

Because it's cheaper, Trawsfynedd nuclear power station (Magnox) is applying for a variation to it's disposal licence as part of it's decomissioning works.

They want to fill in the spent waste ponds and then concrete cap them. This will mean leeching into the lakes and rivers - which will traverse down the rivers past Portmerion and Porthmadog and out to the Irish sea. They have to apply for a licence as A) the original disposal plan was to excavate and dispose (Sellafield) and infill with material taken from offsite and B) the radiation leekage will likely be excess of permitted levels. I say likely because they can't actually take readings at the moment, so it's guesswork.

Trawsfynedd is gorgeous. The town is a complete shithole. This is because the siting of a great big nuclear carbuncle on the edge of the lake has prevented the area from being developed for tourism. And it's so suited for tourism. It's in the National Park, situated right on a large lake, the Rhinog range is spectacular when you get on it (but they're the least travelled of all the Snowdonia mountain ranges because who wants to walk in full view of a nuclear power station?). It's the same with Caemaes Bay in Anglesey - one of the potentially most picturesque bays on the Island, but it's a tourist desert and the whole area is poverty-stricken as a result.

They openly saying it's a cost thing. (Less dangerous too - they don't have to transport the waste). But the long-term cost to the area is ridiculous. And it will set a precedent. If they can do this with Trawsfynedd then they can do it everywhere. So they'll pock-mark the United Kingdom with nuclear waste disposal facilities that leach into the ground.

Sellafield is already a leechate nightmare - so transporting and disposing of it there at least keeps it to one place.

Fuck this shit.

Shouldn't be going anywhere near Drax. That fucker needs shutting down.

I suspect it is due to there being spare transformer capacity as Drax used to create nearly 4000 MW in its coal era compared to the 2600 MW it does now in its biomass era.

That another pointless post deserved a pointless reply :p
Don't see why pointing out ridiculous expenditure is pointless.

The costs of sellafield are at the levels that it holds back infrastructure spending in the UK. The sort of increases that puts the tory black hole and the tax increases we're all going to stump up for in perspective. And this is financial millstone we're giving ourselves could have more meaningfully been spent in a better bang-for-buck way - including saving lives from fossil fuel.

You've done it before and it was countered, you'll probably be able to do another post in a couple of years when the costs increase again. To me the thing that should have been done in the past and still needs to be done is a proper repository like the Onkalo spent nuclear fuel repository in Finland.
