Scouse things the world can get all its energy needs from unicorn tears so no need for nuclear.

I think he is all for Energy prices tripling when our old reactors shut down and we can't make enough energy for everyone. As long as you are rich or on the dole you will be fine. If you live pay check to pay check you better buy some candles :)

We needed another generation of power plants to be started 10 years ago it is too late now. Lets hope someone invents a viable alternative in the next 10 years.

Loading a rocket with radioactive gunk strikes me as a brilliant plan tbh.

Cool when an alien planet thinks we've attacked them! :p

Its a great idea and the only reason it didnt happen is because very uninformed tree huggers had strokes at the thought of it...the waste would be in a form that could harmlessly survive total destruction of the rocket at any height...really though we should simply push forward to extract the total energy from radioactive material and stop treating it as waste.

so, erm, if it's that harmless then why are we using a billion euro asset to shoot it in to...you know...space? if it's that harmless, why not use it for building materials or kiddy toys or something useful?

bikes! Then they would glow, thus also providing a valuable safety feature for when car drivers deliberately try to mow you down.

Bury it or blow it into space.

Anyone henceforth who says something as obviously retarded as "blow it into space" should be shot and their family line wiped out lest the contamination of their personality gets passed to other humans.

Basically they would just transform it into the most stable form of glass and seal it in an entry proof capsule..even if the capsule is broken it would fall as easily recoverable chunks.
In reality a rail gun or laser system would be far cheaper and safer..it will never happen because the very word radiation has been associated with decades of scare mongering and mis information
.

They can not safely transport it by anything other than rail because the container thick enough to carry Nuclear waste safely without leaking radiation is too heavy to go by road. You could build a container that could survive a rocket full of fuel exploding but it would be so big and heavy it would be impractical.

You won that with the retarded "blow it into space" line you pulled out of your well-reamed ass. :p
Assuming blowing it into space is off the table, that leaves one option. Which is what they're doing... If you have a better idea (about what to do with radioactive stuff *now*) I'm sure they'd be all ears.

You asked what options there were for dealing with the shit. Not if they would be used. Sending it into space is an option. And if we had a safe space elevator so we could transport it out or to the moon rather than a rocket then it would be a viable option.

Just because god made you judge and jury doesn't mean your right

I think they need to keep it safe until it is safe to seal it in glass and store it in dry casks. Then I would dig a very big very deep tunnel in one of the mountains in the peak district and seal it off compartment by compartment until we have the tech to deal with it safely. It is a necessary evil but with decent fault lines sticking it under a mountain seems the safest thing to do once it is safe to to stored.

The thing about deep geological disposal is that it's not working anywhere.

For a start - we can't design a "cask" for disposal that lasts more than 300 years. After that the casks themselves become radioactive waste...

...the fact is that there is NO safe way to store this stuff that humans are aware of. And we're gonna make more of it.

Yeah that is why we need the safest way possible which is dry cask well out of the way. In 200 years we might need to cask it again or we might have the technology to dispose of it.

I agree. But the problem is that the safest way possible we have is still unsafe.
I agree with that. The only place we disagree is thinking that it is not a necessary risk. Depending on countries like Russia for Oil and Gas is not a good long term plan. 10 years ago we should have started building a new generation of power plants as they are the only way we can be self sufficient for the next 30-50 years while hopefully a viable green renewable energy source can be found.

Viable green renewable energy sources are already available according to the head of the UN's environment committee. According to him if we'd have spent 1/3rd of what we spent "saving" the rich people banks we could have fixed global warming and secured global energy supplies. He almost quit, apparently.

Iceland reckon they can provide the whole of Europe with Geo-thermal electricity, given the investment.

investment.

Crazy fools.

But isn't that the same as saying if we had only invested £10 Trillion we could have cured cancer. I thought that he was saying that if we had spent that money on developing Green Energy we could have a viable solution. But that is just a guess that throwing money at it would have solved the problem he is not aware of an answer?

No. He says we've got the answer with technology available today but vested interests stop us from fixing the problem. Until banks go tits up and rich people look like they're gonna suffer and guess what?! - we bail the rich out.

Energy security isn't the problem - that's just a very fixable engineering issue. The problem is that we "the people" aren't worth securing. The rich will weather global warming just fine thankyouverymuch...

The problem with that is until there is just one global nation you can not really have an energy policy that is dependent on another nation. Any land locked nation would need to have all of their energy come though another country and probably have to pay for the privilege.
