I'd like to go to London Zoo today to see the new penguin pool. But...the Mrs has decided to vent her spleen at the cruelty of city zoos.

Sigh.

The Mrs thinks keeping animals like lions, tigers, monkeys, elephants etc out of their natural habitats in tiny enclosures hand fed instead of being allowed to roam naturally is unnatural and cruel. I told her the animals are probably better cared for, protected & looked after than a lot of ppl in this country. Does she have a point?

I don't like seeing animals caged up personally.

Zoo's should be done away with imo. If you want to see these animals you should have to make the effort, not have them flown in a box 2 miles down the road to live in a cage.

I dont agree with it, but they are needed. Too many of the animals are being made extinct in the current times and the best way to preserve the bloodlines for the future is zoos. The reserves in Africa etc are still prone to getting hit by poochers and they can not protect the animals still, even though some of them actually use the ARMY to protect the areas.

I prefer a safari park where they given alot more room, but they will always be hand fed. You cant stick a live animal in and let the animals go to town on it. This has been done in a park somewhere and the animal cruelity people came out the woodwork (same ones that moan about hand feeding etc not being natural moan that a poor animal is put in to get killed... wtf!?!?)

Zoo's are a necessary evil. Without them the number of places that animals could be safeguarded drop dramatically, and to be honest the zoo's have been improving over recent years and increasing the size of holding areas etc.
Rather a hand fed, but happy animal in the zoo, than a dead animal in the wild killed for just 1% of its body and the rest left to rot. . . . oh and this rotting animal isnt good for the environment because I saw something like 80% of the vulture population has disappeared and alot of carcasses arent being striped and disease is more rampant :(

As cruel as keeping a dog really, or a cat for that matter.

Snake, scorpions, birds.

Not that black&white.

A caged wild lion out of habitat in this shitty weather is as cruel as keeping a well exercised, domesticated dog / cat?

lolwat?

In most cases an animal will have a better life in a cage though.

London Zoo is one of the world's leading conservation sites and does vitally important work. It's nowhere near as black and white as people think. If you do think that, I'd suggest going and working at one and seeing what actually goes on and how everything is geared towards the animal's wellbeing and happiness.

Not all zoos are like London Zoo though, and these are the ones that you should be concerned about.

We went to London zoo last year, like wazz says they do loads of conservation work, and there is a lot of educational material about the animals on the site. Not everyone can afford to go to Kenya to see these animals in there natural habitat and a place like London zoo is the best way to educate them about the problems some of these species face.

They have also done sterling work in repopulation with some that are close to extinction.

Regardless of what anyone says against them, zoo's play a big role in the continuation of many species. Take the Panda as an example, how many of them would be left, in the wild or in zoo's for that matter.

Off course in an ideal world, it would be far better if they could be seen in their natural environment but this is not really practical. I am pretty sure we cannot, even with all the wonders of modern science, reproduce the habitat the African Savannah's or the tropical rain forests of South America in Regents Park.

For me personally i have been truly lucky in that i spent the best part of two months in Zambia, living in the Bush and experienced both Safari and Hunting in the process.

Trust me when i say that you can never go to another zoo without being seriously disappointed.

Though i suppose it is a hell of a lot easier being able to find all the animals in one place without having to spend endless hours searching for the damn things when you are out in the bush :p

I would also recommend, very highly indeed, going on Safari /Hunting in Africa, it is one of those things that every human being must do at least once.
