As seen here http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acata...CPU_and_System_Coolers_18.html#aHS_2D000_2DZA

I'm looking for a silent cooler for my AMD TB 1.4Ghz cpu and this seems to be the best option.

The fact that it's fanless leads me to worry if it's actually any good or not. Almost all reviews rave about it, but i'm wondering if anyone here has got one and tried it themselves? Does it cool effectively? Is the fan supplied near silent?

I'm not interested in overclocking, so i'll be running at vanilla flavoured 1.4 Ghz.

Cheers

Its not fanless, uses a large slow spining fan and would be fine on non oced cpus.

Soz, i wasn't too clear on that - i mean the heatsink is fanless, and also, if the fan supplied was sufficient.

I have two 80mm fan blow holes controlled by a voltage that is pulse modulated spinning 'em silently to blow onto the present HSF anyway. Presumably, these slow spinning fans would be just as good (if not better, bringing in cool air from outside the case) as the fan supplied with the Zalman.

K Emb, i'll purchase one then :)

I have a Zalmaan. I was a little worried for the same reasons as you, but it's fine. Excellent.

ItchyTrigaFinga,

What sorta temps idle / load do you get with it, and what CPU?

Doh !!

I've managed to break one of the plastic fittings on the socket, when I tried to remove the old heat sink.

I've got my zalman flower cooler in there but it's only attached by one side of the fan, and my pc won't work properly unless I lie it on it's side, I get a bios checksum error or something.

I'm a bit worried If it'll be ok, not being attached tightly, do I need to start shopping for a new mother board or can it be fixed, maybe super glueing back on,

why o why are the clips so hard to remove :(

My CPU temp has increased a a few C, 40c at the highest fan speed, and 42c at the lowest, which btw I can definetly notice the difference in noise from my old coolermaster 4500rpm fan :)

I'd be interested to know your improvements in temp etc

Cheers

Have you tried some thermal epoxy? It'll glue the heatsink permanently onto the cpu - it's a one way ticket though.

You can get some here (arctic silver thermal epoxy, at the bottom of the page)

Thanks for that, thought it was a hopeless situation, :)

prolly upgrade my duron 850 to a athlon TB 1.4 ghz first, which is the highest my mb can handle. That way, it won't matter if it's stuck forever.

It does say as a adehisive you can dilute it,

hmm, how much will I have dilute it for it stick properly, yet still be detachable.

It's out of stock at the moment, know any other suppliers ?

Thanks

here?

Out of stock there too, which suggests out of stock at manufacturer. Be patient ;)

Once you've stuck on the HSF to the CPU - i can only presume it ain't coming off. I recommend you wait until you get a new CPU, or buy a grotty £15 HSF in the meantime.

Be warned that the Arctic Silver Thermal Epoxy is not designed to be used with CPUs and HSF.

Yeah i meant to say, but it's a last ditch attempt at already buggered situation - clips for the HSF knacked 'n' all.

I'd probably say the safer route was to swap the HSF to a taisol which are made to use all of the clips on each side of the socket.

That way you get a heatsink that fits and doesn't mean you're pouring conductive glue near the CPU (arctic silver and arctic silver epoxy are suspensions of micronized silver and both conduct a current). get any on the motherboard/CPU and it will more than likely die horribly!

Had a look at the artic silver website, it said it wasn't suitable for between the CPU core and the heatsink, Funny that , whats the hell it's for !!

Anyway Sticking with the glue thing, I super glued the broken plastic back to the socket, :) great stuff, forgotton how strong the stuff is.. Broke off the first time when trying to attach the heatsink, but once I left it to dry over night, It stayed attached when I tried this morning.

:) ...no

Its for things like Heatsinks for Graphics card etc.

arctic silver thermal epoxy is only for ramsinks, gpus and chipsets, because of the anchor method used for processors anyone who tries using it is as lunatic and needs to maybe consider switching to a Mac :p

Would these GPU coolers work ok with a gefoce4 Ti4400 ? I have the creative "blow drier" and i desperately need to make it quieter. I have a feeling the answer will be "no", but if anyone has tried/tested let me know.

there is indeed

and no, it doesn't require epoxying - so it's a non permanent solution:

g4a.jpg

uses two little plastic pins to go into the holes the creative uses - a little daub of the arctic silver III thermal paste will do the business (PASTE NOT EPOXY ;))

only time you really need to use the epoxy is with ramsinks... and even then there are other options :)
