Was gonna post in that Youtube thread, but since this isn't about particular videos it's best making a new thread.

Has anyone recently (actually over past month or two) been getting owned to bits by adverts on Youtube? I don't mean the adverts which are at the sides of the pages, those are generally taken care of by AdBlock.

No, the ones i mean are when you're watching a video (Pretty much any video) a small popup appears at the bottom of the video which then blocks off a quarter of the video in question.

Its annoying to fuck and i can't seem to disable them, i've had a quick check of AdBlock but it doesn't seem to be affected by it.

If it continues i'll probably end up skipping Youtube, i ended up having to stop using Liveleak because of the shitty adverts down the side of the pages which again, AdBlock wouldn't take care of.

Annoying.

Annoying but since youtube is free, note free, can't really complain.

It's like kids who complain about not getting the RIGHT free candy *slap forehead*

People have every right to dislike adverts and the obtrusive use of them, whether its free or not.

Youtube using shitty adverts splashed all over the videos is annoying.

All those ads on youtube have a little x on them so you can close it. Its really simple; freeloaders have pretty much broken every paid content model on the internet, leaving advertising as the only (marginal for everyone except Google) revenue model. If freeloaders break the ad market as well; then no more content. Its really that straightforward. I really wish people who use the internet would actually get it into their thick skulls that everything has a cost.

While not in so many words, my opinion always has been that the annoying stuff pay for the free stuff.

It's not to say that people don't have the right to complain, it's just silly :D

Examples of websites that need to have pop ups to survive please. (this isn't adverts as such, its pop ups)

banner ads at the bottom of the screen would work just as well, they don't have to block a portion of the viewing area. Probably better actually as they wouldn't annoy people into just ignoring them and closing them...

The business model Spotify are using seems like the way forward if they can get enough people on board.

Well, i always consider "Is the ruckus worth the trouble?" and in this case, one x click is not really an issue, if it keeps the free stuff flowing.

Yes but its pointless, its something people have to do (yes I realise its just a case of clicking a little red X) and doesn't actually generate any income for the company advertising. I imagine most of the time people don't even take any notice at all of the business or product being advertised, just pop, click the X, forgotten about. Whereas a banner ad that is on the screen or viewing area (that doesn't block the content) for much longer will be noticed both consciously and sub consciously.

Trust me, Spotify is fucked long-term using its current business model. It only works at the moment because the labels are currently subsidising it in the hope a new model emerges. Even if everyone switches from the free to subs version (which they won't) the price point is currently too low. All the research suggests the sweet spot for paid music subs is about €5 a month; but the economics of paying the labels and running infrastructure is quite a lot higher than that per subscriber (even with subs in the millions of users), so you'll probably need a hybrid of subs and ads to be sustainable. This is actually one part of what I'm doing for a living right now, so I know these numbers inside out.

I think it's based on the model of TV pop-ups, which according to some or other media dude, seem to work.

Can't really say without any numbers, but if it doesn't generate anything, i doubt it's going to stay.

Except, guess what, you're wrong. Video ads work WAY better than banners, and demand much higher CPM or CPC rates. So its absolutely not pointless (at least not yet, wear out may come later). Its very easy for technically aware people (like most Freddies) to project their viewpoint/prejudices onto the mass audience and come to the wrong conclusion about what works. Its why Google makes so much money; most people clicking on PPC ads on Google aren't even aware it is advertising.

Head of Content for a telco. Which means I'm working on streaming music services (desktop and mobile) right now, as well as sports services, VOD (eventually) and other stuff, and unfortunately I get to run the ad department as well...

Youtube has no valid or legitimate uses other than a massive timewaste, so no sympathy here.
