I know some of you guys, alot of you guys, design your own web pages, and are, a-hem, opinionated bastards to boot. Soooo... my brother is looking to improve his web design skills, thinking maybe to do it as work, flex those artistic nerd muscles...

He already knows html programming, and was wondering whats necessairy knowledge and what tools you use. And what has you running screaming insults.

If you could help, that would be lubberly.

Tank Cho!

If he already knows HTML properly, then he doesn't need anything other than a trusty copy of notepad to be honest. Keep sticking with HTML, and pick up a copy of DreamWeaver to have a play.. couple of nice skills to have.

Just make sure he expriements with all kinds of layouts and designs, even if he feels they aren't going to well - because then you will find out what works for the designer, as well as what works for the user.

See, I'm trying to recall those toastey flames you save for the poor types that tout their websites here. A kind of "what not to do" thing. But because I don't get it, its all gibberish in my memory. The words frames and flash, and then Bodhisms... its all so vague...

Cheers for your help. I'll pass it on, but probably translate it into Damini'isms and render it useless drivel by the time I pass it on, but at least I can sayI tried :)

If he's got good HTML skills he should make sure they work using HTMLkit (www.chami.com) by coding an entire site by hand. Btw before anybody spouts that notepad is sufficient HTMLkit has a built in preview which would save the guy manually saving, swapping to IE & hitting refresh.

As for what not to do, my pet peeves atm are:
  1. Flash intro pages
  2. Pages that open window after window after window for no good reazon
  3. sections with "Under construction" as the entire content, if it ain't ready don't add the section
[/list=1]As long as he knows his HTML & can do reasonable graphical stuff (which I suck at, photoshop is my idea of hell) he can most likley pick up the rest as he goes.
