You thought printers were bad

Little article about adding management chips to car tyres.

Anyone worried about only being able to use approved tyres yet? Remember, it is illegal to break the protection on the chips. Just like printer makers in the US are using the DMCA to stop people copying their cartridge control chips to make cheaper refills.

Its amazing how stupid one law can be, and yet the EU rushes to copy it.

"our tire has detected <insert brandname here> components in your car and will now automatically deflate"

"our tire has detected you are inflating it with <insert brandname here>'s pumping system and will only accept <insert other brandname here>'s high standard air. you have violated our EULA. this tire will now deflate"

"this tire is pished off with your low-quality car and will now rapidly degrade"

As far as I knew in the EU they were pushing printer manufacturers on ink cartridges that they were not recyclable and that they were going to be fined.

True, I remember reading about that, whereas in the US the DCMA was abused (not that it has ever been used for its intended purpose) to stop third party refills.

Anti-piracy laws are just so open for abuse, but MPs aren't well enough informed to understand. Hell, the minister for technology doesn't even have broadband, even though he can get ADSL or cable.
