Mine spent it's entire life on it's side and never died. Clearly you lot are giving them plenty of room and fresh air rather than sticking them in the smallest of cramped places beside the TV.

No, Sony confirmed that putting them on their side generally fucks them. You got lucky. :) Sony themselves will not keep their consoles on their sides and recommend people in the industry do the same. Basically, the vertical storage of PS2 was a total gimmick and should only ever have been used when the console was off. I don't know how much this applies to the PS3, but I'd give it the same kind of gravity.

Nope, good marketing. Bet lots of people bought new PS2s when theirs died out earlier than it should have.

But at the end of the day it's still a bit iffy. :) I hope it's not the case with PS3s but most vertical discs drives tend to die faster than horizontal ones.

Mine never had a stand. Maybe that's why it worked so well?

The disk drive broke on my first PS2, it wouldn't open. Bought the slim as a replacement and gave the broken one to my brother in law, he managed to get it working again, as far as I know its still going. None of my friends had any problems with theirs and none of my friends have had problems with their PS3s...

OK - it's working again. Need to backup all data just in case. Do you think a 16GB USB stick will do (don't need to do PSN games and patches etc as I can re-download surely) ? I've got one with an old Fedora install on it. I take it I'll need to re-format as FAT32 ? Anyone done it before ?

You can try, but USB sticks are usually fucking slow so it may take more than a while.

You might not actually have the dreaded ylod, if its a reasonably old ps3 it may just be caked with dust inside
I have read it happen a few times now,
Grab a can of compressed air from your local diy shop, turn it off for a couple of hours with the plug switched off to discharge and give it a blast through the vent to see what comes out

Alternatively just get a quote on how much to fix it or if you are brave open it up and try yourself

It won't be dust. I had it fixed for the same thing 3 months ago. It's cheap-ass Sony bollox is what it is.
