nath, my first gen ps3 purchased in release year is still fine. But, I've not used it heavily. Wij has certainly cained his to death with hour of gaming.
From reading threads on the subject, it seems that it's a usage thing. sony are ***** for not owning up to the issue tbh. It needs the same kind of media attention that the 360 got.

It won't get that much because a much lower percentage are dying. Plus, the slim and newer ones are supposed to live longer, in general.

That doesn't actually give an idea of how many are failing. It's not like people are going to open their web browser and think "oh, I think I'll go make a thread on avforums about how my PS3 hasn't failed yet".

it is an issues its not as bad as the 360 rlod one tho, the offical forms for that was swamped with peeps asking wtf is wrong with thier 360s.
tho i'll be pissed if my release day one goes that way, think the slim does not have mem card slots which i find handy for transferring pics to the ps3

From what I've seen it is quite common for the old fatties to die. It just takes a bit longer than the old 360s did. Essentially though they still have the same design-flaw. They aren't designed to last.
If they can get it working again I don't have much confidence that it will last. I'll just have to back-up all my data and get ready to fork out for a slim

You may be better off getting it repaired out of warranty - lots of places offer it a lot cheaper than Sony and still guarantee their work for 3 months. From reading avforums threads though it seems that sometimes repair is not an option

from what i can remember if you had it standing on its side then it would be more likely to die. another thing is that alot of the early ones had a 2nd rate fan the fins would eventually melt. this was due to the company manufacturing the fans were selling sony defected ones
and on the ps3 yold issues i am wondering if peeps ps3s started getting loud almost to 360 levels before the issue struc em?

Mine spent it's entire life on it's side and never died. Clearly you lot are giving them plenty of room and fresh air rather than sticking them in the smallest of cramped places beside the TV.Oh yeah, anyone that keeps any PS on its side is asking for it. This was especially the case for PS2s.
