hi,

been playing on BW, but ive never used the forums before :)

Anyway, having a bit of trouble installing windows XP pro.

My spec - 1.4GHz Athelon, 256MB RAM, Geforce2

Everything goes ok, until the system restarts and gets to the part with the blue screen, everything loads ok then in the bottom it says "Starting Windows" and absolutely nothing happens from then, no HD or CD activity.

Ive tried absolutely everything i could think of to get it working, even reformatted my HD with the NTFS file system and it still wouldnt work. Also, i disabled my onboard audio just incase it was causing any problems.

Incidently, this is trying the fresh installation and not the upgrade. The upgrade also crashes at the same posistion

Any ideas?

Cheers in advance

Jac

Oddly enough I had the same problem with an athlon system & GF2. Installed fine on a P4/GF3 system ok. Deffo a hardware prob somewhere, god knows where though...

Yes, I had this problem to.
Something to do with the Geforce 2 (in my case MX-400) and the motherboard chipset I figure (do you use RAID? I have a RAID chip that I don't use on my mobo, that might be it).

Getting round is reletively simple. You need to borrow another graphics card from a mate for 24 hours, not a Geforce, obviously, and install using that. When you've installed, swap the cards back and all will be fine.

Then, make a ghost of the system pronto, so you never have to reinstall again!!! (if you do, it'll be cause of new hardware, which would likely mean changing to a new graphics board anyway!!!).

That's how I got round it, and that was using a really old ATi PCI card :D. I can only assume its a compat. problem in the installation program, cause in XP itself it is fine.

Solved :p

This is quite a common problem with the 'corporate' image of XP Pro doing the (warez) rounds. There are a couple of corrupted files that need to be replaced.

Do a Google search to get more details.
