HELP!!!!!!!!!!!


i recently bought a Pentium 4 1.9 windows xp computer. i used 2 have a P3 windows 98 computer with a pci conexant 56k modem and would ping at 180-210 on team fortress. with the new computer i ping at a average of 700!!!!!!!!!!!
i decided to unistall the modem that came with the computer and bought a external zoom v.92 56k and installed it. and suprise suprise i still ping at 700!!!!!. i know its not the zoom modem bcoz i tried it on my old computer and it worked fine. ive been told its a xp issue at pc world where i bought the computer from.

HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPP MEEEEEEEEE PLZ!!! im having severe withdrawl symtoms from not playing online anymore. And ive looked everywhere 4 help on this issue.

Whats your ISP?

ALSO:
XP also tries to download updates for itself Automatically while on-line! Make sure this is set back to manual!!!! Otherwise u will end up downloading a 2 meg file while playing... and on a 56k that will suck the bandwidth!! Thus High pings

my isp is AOL...lol

b4 u start i was piging 180-210 with aol on my old computer but ill try freeserve on ur advice.

mmm, u are using AOL optimized numbers? When u installed it u set up the numbers, You need to have a BT line to use the better numbers IE: the Friaco numbers 0808 etc?
Otherwise your call gets routed through to severs in usa!!! HIGH PINGS!!!

XP will download updates by itself so just check it, freeserve is 'OK' but check out :

Some good advice and u can look at what users of the ISP's think!

Might find a better one!!!

switching off downloads and trying freeserve got my ping down to the lower 200's . A big improvment!!!!!! from 700 on team fortress. lol nearly as good as my old pc.lol

gonna download "tweakmaster" and c what happens.

ur a lifesaver!!!!!!

even on a good day on my old pc i could never geta 130 ping!!!!!

have you tried the "QoS" fix?

I've never had aproblem with it, normal pings in games for a 56k modem for me in XP
But a friend of mine has a software modem like yourself and his pings didn't get "back to normal" with XP until he tried the "QoS" fix.
