is there any way in windows XP to assign a drive letter to a certain removable device?
the problem is i have 2 removable devices that pop up as drives (digital camera and iPod) the camera has happily been drive i: when i plugged it in for the last month or so, but since i got the ipod, that likes being drive i: too. technically, its not a problem as such, i could just plug one in at a time. but i dont want that from an expensive majical box.

i need a way of telling the digi cam to be drive i: and the ipod to be j: so i can tell their programs where to find them when i plug them in?

get me? no? good.

You can normally reassign drive letters using Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Admin Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management (phew ! thats classic format for you).

On any "drive" you can right click and it may allow you to "Change Drive Letter", of course you'll need to plugged in at the time. I'm guessing it may be permanent so you can disconnect the device and it'll remember.

Otherwise I'd say there is probably an option in the device properties or software that controls it.

Just to confirm that Xanes method works. I have Novel set up on this machine to map university network drives, one of which is I: so removable devices didn't get mapped when I plugged them in. I changed it to J: and it remembers it.

yeah it works exactly like i expected. i did think about this method but i assumed because they were removable devices they wouldnt remember what letter i assigned to them.
