SK6 is good but it can't beat the PAL8045.

The PAL is HUGGGGGGGGGGGGE! :p mmm I need to think about this!

btw I've already got 5 case fans and an enermax with 2 fans! So the noise issue is important :)

the 8045 is relatively large but you can fit a pretty slow spinning fan to it... so noise would be negligable.

If you seriously aren't considering overclocking (which would really mean unlocking the cpu) then as long as it's rated for the speed it should be ok - personally I'd never fit a coolermaster, AMD send us the coolermasters with sample chips occasionally as they get tons of them for free - and they're absolutely useless.

The SK6 has been outdone in just about every way now, it's really end of life and if you stuck a smaller fan to it it might not be able to take the heat,

Yea :) I notice that AMD now say that all coolers must have some copper base on heatsinks.... Seems that cheap is no longer the way :D

That dont impress me much [/shaniatwainvoice]

The real issue is, you have an empty slot.

Ive got a stick of 32mbpc100 if your struggling for resources. ;)

wanna borrow my rubber mallet to get it to 'fit' in the slot? heh

failing that I've got some 512mb sticks here that might actually w0rk0r... heh

I've also got a spare 8045 - anyone dare me to try and fit it to one of our ti4600? ;)

A year on I wonder how much things have changed..

Anyway I've upgraded a computer from xp1500+ to xp2000+ but I don't think the cheap evercool hsf can handle it. It runs at almost 60c idle, and when I try to do a sandra cpu multimedia benchmark, it reboots.

So convince me to get one, is the alpha PAL8045 still the one to go for ? .

I'm not going to be overclocking it, and I don't really want to spend more than £50 with the fan.

:)

I have an Akasa AK821 on an OC'd XP2100 and it runs at 50C on full load, it cost £18.

The PAL, like said previous, is a fine fan if you want to really push your CPU, but its INCREDIBLY noisy.

If your not going to be overclocking, then any fan by one of the bigger manufacturers (Akasa, Coolermaster, Thermaltake etc) that is correctly rated will cool your machine comfortably, and for a lot less than 50 quid.

Thanks Willier I think I'll go for the Akasa AK-821 2Q Silent CPU Cooler from OCUK about £22 I think you get the fan with it. Maybe you want confirm that.

Hi Happy Go Lucky

I believe you do get the fan with that cooler :) The Overclocking Store have it in stock for £19.96 inc. P&P, if you want to save a few pennies.

Kind Regards

Yep, you do get a fan with that, I doubt that there are many CPU hsf units that ship without one tbh, since the fan is an integral part of the overall performance design (I would hope)

As for the clippy thing, I dont remember mine being a six pointer, although it does attatch to 2 lugs on the CPU socket (I think)

Theres a silly little review here. ;)
