The company's recent quarterly financial report provides a look at Microsoft's losses on the Xbox.

Microsoft yesterday filed its results for the financial quarter that ended on September 30, and the new report provides a clearer breakdown of how the company's individual divisions are performing. Microsoft's home and entertainment division--which consists of its Xbox, PC games, consumer software, and TV groups--accounted for a loss of $177 million for the period of July 1 through September 30. During the same period the previous year, before the Xbox launched, the same division had losses of $68 million.
The Xbox is the primary focus of the division, and Microsoft's report emphasized the impact of the marketing costs involved with the promotion of the console on the financial performance of the division. While the home and entertainment division posted greatly increased revenues of $485 million for the quarter, the high costs involved in marketing Xbox products were cited as the primary factor behind the division's increased losses. Microsoft has said it plans to spend $2 billion to establish the Xbox console in the market, and it no doubt has the money to spend. Increased profits in other divisions completely offset Xbox-related losses, and the company posted a net profit of $2.7 billion for those three months.

its doing better than gamecube in the states and in the UK, As for this new deal, its another great one, one of the great things about competition is that companies try to out do each other, by offering different deals to appeal to different people. Microsoft know and do this and so do Sony and Nintendo.

The xbox is an abosolute bargain(hardware wise, although the games in that bundle are excellent) and if people cant see that, then its there loss. Im a PC gamer and even i can see that.

177 million loss on XBox is a drop in an ocean to Microsoft, one of the reasons DC failed is because sega couldnt support it financially.

The only reason its started to do better is down to the recent deals although at the end of the day I still don't really have a reason for buying one either way.

but you could say that about any console or new product on any market.

By the way, im not trying to convince you to buy one.

I can see it happening

This may seem like a good deal, but who knows in the future we might have
  • Buy 1 game and get a free xbox
  • Half Price xbox if you subscribe to xbox live

They can afford it.

It seems like a good deal, but £169 for the privilege of actually being able to buy games this time next year sounds an even better deal.

No since the PS2 is still selling well without a game in the box.

I still wish we lived somewhere like Malaysia where games were £2-3 and were perfectly DVD copied.

If everwhere pirated games, then there would be no games or even consoles.

Embattle, the majority of consoles ever released have had bundled games, sometimes the maker of the consoles do it, sometimes the shops do it themselves. Why are you so hostile toward another console anyway?.

The PS2 sells well mainly down to brand familiarity and most people dont understand the technical differences between the machines.

If the XBox and PS2 were released at the same time the XBox would be the better value, you get more for your money and asimilar number of games to play. Now its cheaper than PS2 which is an even better deal.

Look if i sound patronizing to anyone, it wasnt intended, all i was trying to do(originally) was defend Xbox from the usuall negative attitude that a lot of people have slipped into.

Thanks for the unnecessary history lesson

The Xbox is the new boy on the market and I reckon Jeremy Clarkson described it best when he summed up the new Audi A8 against the long standing leader of the pack, Mercedes S-Class. The A8 is very good but you have to be 20 times better to beat the leader and the same is true in the console arena, the Xbox isn't 20 times better and in fact it would just about come up equal in my book.

I've said before the Xbox is starting to look appealing but thats after the price has been nearly sliced in half and it now includes 2 games in the box. A price drop that is costing MS a small fortune since they most probably haven't even made back enough money to cover development costs, unlike the PS2.

I currently have a PC, PS2 and GC but I don't find the time to play all them, plus I also don't really find any single game on the Xbox enough to justify me buying one.

Perhaps MS will do better with the Xbox 2 which will most probably appear earlier than originally planned.

Sounded like you needed one. :)

The thing is, GC isnt doing much better and Nintendo has been in the running for quite a few generations of console(4?). Yet the focus is almost always directed at whether XBox is failing or not.

It was and has been the norm for years to sell consoles at a loss and recoup with software sales, MS may not have managed this yet, but i believe thats only a matter of time. Your right though XBox2 will possibly do better, as people will know that MS are here to stay, hopefully there game release catalogue will be better next time. usually its hard for developers to get hold Devkits at first for new consoles, if MS can say just use a Pentuim 4-5 and an nvidia graphics card in the meantime perhaps more titles will be available next time.

PS3 is rumoured to be brought forward because of the fright XBox gave them(hardware wise). Next time it might be a race to get there console out first and at the cheapest price. This kind of comptetition is good for the customer.

here endeth the lesson :D

I don't since all what your saying I know, and others know, and thus I don't mention it because I consider it irrelevant.

Yes this is the way console manufacturers make money, via games, a method pioneered by Nintendo. Although with the Xbox dropping in price fast and level of uptake slowly increasing I personally think MS might be lucky to break-even before an xbox 2.

I don't agree with this rumour as the PS2 is getting on a bit and yet can still hold its own against both the GC and Xbox in terms of the total package and so far there hasn't been much information given about the PS3.

Im not psyshic, i cannot tell what you do or dont know, unless i bring it up.

MS had to drop its price fast to catch up with Sony, Sony could take its time with the PS2 price reductions, when it was released, because it lacked the competition, except the DC which had no chance.

In a way Sony screwed over its customers by releasing a sub standard machine, again, at a far to higher price and it stayed high for much longer. GC and Xbox are both superior machines(hardware wise) and cost less.

Anyways this threads run its course, so im off, battlefeild 1942 beckons.

nice talking to you.

Sony did nothing of the sort, it actually did what most of the console companies have to do, or like to do, recoup development costs as fast as possible. Even when the PS2 was launched on a pre-order system there were more takers than consoles available which is amazing considering the initial asking price.

MS has now realised no way in hell was it going to be able to match that and has turned to Penetration pricing which is working to a limited extent, this has now shifted the emphasis to the games of which I don't reckon there are enough quality titles yet. MS may still buy companies, like Rare, but it'll take a little while before anything for the Xbox comes from such development houses.

I now personally believe that buying any console at release is kind of stupid since not only are quality titles lacking but the price of consoles seems to drop rather fast, esp atm.

Thing is that a good batch of decent x-box games has only just started to appear. For a long time there's been Halo... and.. er.. well that's about all really.

Now you've got the first big wave of good new games appearing, stimulated by x-box live going live in the US. When Live goes live here I think there'll be a rise in x-box popularity, even for the non-broadbanders 'cos of the influx of better games.

I remember people talking about the supply running out and i heard(no idea if this is true, just repeating what i heard) that Sony actually didnt produce enough PS2s deliberatly, so that many places would be saying "oh were sold out" which makes PS2 look very popular, quite clever really. it would make some people want it more.

I agree buying consoles at lauch is a mistake, i for one wont be doing that again and yes the good games are few and far between on XBox, but it is improving now, and i always thought it would do up to Xmas. One of the reasons i didnt buy the PS2 is that there are few games that interest me, i nearly bought one for GTA3 which is a fine game, i love having the freedom to do what i want when i want.

Heheh, The PS2 selling well at 300 quid just goes to show it aint price thats a sticking point(although this would make it harder for MS too, as noone would want to spend another 300 on yet another console). So many people owned and enjoyed the PSone they automatically bought its follow up, understandable really. To me though, having worked on PS2/GC/XBox the PS2 is forces so many comprimises when GC and XBox offer so many possibilities during game development.

As people get XBox live, it will cause a rise in games sales, as people buy Xbox live enabled games. So this is good.

Im not bothering myself as im happy enough with my PC.

I believe this was just a false rumour and it had more to do with the companies that provided the chips for the console having problems. At the end of the day they didn't need to use such a method to keep the price high as loads of people were still willing to pay it.

Not in all cases as a high % of these people had bought the PS1, when it was cheap, and weren't going to pay £300 for the PS2.

mmmmmm xbox :)

Just bought the xbox bundle with jsrf, sega gt, halo and splinter cell for 179.99. Are you also aware that you can adapt the xbox to play divx movies. The hard disk can be upgraded to a larger hard disk to store all sorts of fun stuff you can even change the dvd rom drive to allow it to read data cd's as well as dvd & cda disks. Doing this would invalidate both your warranty and access to XBox Live stuff but thats down to individuals owners choice.

179.99 bundle available from the portsmouth branch of Gamestation and suspect all branches nationwide offer same deal.

Cheers.....
