Xbox is so shit that it makes shit itself look very unshit. Hardware wise it's ok I suppose if you like Celerons and crippled Geforce 3's, but games wise it looks pathetic. There is not one game coming out that makes me want to buy an Xbox, nor are any of the games due to come out in the next year making me want to buy one. And with GT3, GTA3, Wipeout Fusion, Devil May Cry, MGS2, Final Fantasy X, Resi Evil : Code Veronica X, Tony Hawk's 3, Tekken 4, Virtua Fighter 4, Smackdown:JBI and Tekken Tag all out or due out soon on PS2, I know which system looks the better buy. And its not made by MS.

Xbox Erupts on the Scene
Unmatched System Power and Game Portfolio Wow North American Gamers

REDMOND, Wash. — Nov. 15, 2001 — Today the Microsoft® Xbox™ video game system rocks the continent with its arrival on store shelves at thousands of retailers across North America.

With the best graphics and audio power of any gaming system, and a launch portfolio of games that has been heralded as more impressive than any in the history of the industry, Xbox kicks open the door to the most explosive, engrossing and intense games experiences on the planet.

“The future of gaming starts today, and it starts with Xbox,” said Bill Gates, chairman and chief software architect of Microsoft Corp. “Xbox is a key part of our strategy to drive the digital entertainment revolution and deliver the future of interactive entertainment to the home. It’s a great example of how Microsoft is innovating. But most important, it’s incredibly cool.”

“Together with our partners, we created Xbox to change the way people think about video games,” said Robbie Bach, chief Xbox officer at Microsoft. “Today’s launch of Xbox is a giant step toward achieving that goal. Over the next few weeks and months, you can expect new Xbox games that further demonstrate the power of Xbox through unprecedented levels of realism, gameplay and entertainment.”

The Best Launch Lineup Ever
Graphics matter, but it’s great gameplay that excites gamers, and Xbox has the strongest lineup ever to debut in a new video game system. Today’s generation of gamers sees video games as a form of entertainment in the same league as music, movies and television.

“Xbox allows the game artists at Tecmo to create stunning, movie-like experiences in games like they’ve never been seen before,” said Tomonobu Itagaki, creator of “Dead or Alive 3” at Tecmo Inc. “‘Dead or Alive 3’ has been called the best-looking video game ever, and it’s all thanks to the tremendous power and flexibility of Xbox.”

The powerful Xbox launch lineup includes these five video games:

“Halo™,” an epic action game that takes place in a science-fiction universe fresh out of a Hollywood movie

“NFL™ Fever 2002,” an officially licensed football game that combines fast and hard-hitting action with stunning TV-quality graphics

“Oddworld: Munch’s Oddysee™,” the game its creators said they couldn’t make on any other system

“Project Gotham Racing™,” which lets gamers jump into Ferraris, Porsches and BMWs and race with blazing speed through the streets of New York City, London, San Francisco and Tokyo

“Dead or Alive 3™,” said to be the best fighting game ever, which showcases the full potential of 3-D combat with the largest, most interactive environment ever

These must-have games are just part of the Xbox launch lineup. Nineteen games are available for Xbox during launch week, and another 10 to 15 games will hit store shelves before the end of the holiday season. Many more are in development from some of the best game developers, including Electronic Arts, Sega of America, Konami of America Inc., Activision Inc. and Namco Ltd.

Xbox Online: The Future of Gaming
In the coming months, Xbox gamers will enter an online theme park full of thrilling rides beyond their imaginations. The built-in hard drive coupled with the built-in Ethernet port for broadband connectivity will connect living rooms to create global playgrounds. The online capability of Xbox will allow players to access new levels, new characters and new games, all from the comforts of their couch. No other system has this built-in capability. (Broadband is scheduled to go live in summer 2002.)

“With a built-in hard drive and Ethernet port, Xbox is the only system designed from the ground up to deliver a complete online gaming experience. Online is our secret weapon,” Bach said.

Excitement Heating Up at Retail
Retailers feel the rumblings of an imminent Xbox arrival, and they are excited too. “As the first Xbox units arrive from the factory, our biggest challenge is making sure that gamers don’t buy them faster than we can stock the shelves. This is a hot one,” said Dan DeMatteo, chief executive officer at GameStop Inc.

Xbox, with an estimated retail price of $299,* can be found at more than 15,000 retail locations across North America. A list of retailers can be found at http://www.xbox.com/.

About Xbox
Xbox is Microsoft’s future-generation video game system that delivers the most powerful games experiences ever. Xbox empowers game artists by giving them the technology to fulfill their creative visions as never before, creating games that blur the lines between fantasy and reality. I wish people wouldn't go on with their 'XBox is just a PC in a small box' crap.

In reply to Bodhi : It runs a 733Mhz Pentium 3, with a GPU codenamed NV3, which is considerably more advanced than today's crop of Geforce 3's. It also uses a unified memory architecture, 64Mb available to both GPU and CPU, which offers considerable advantages over PS2's 32Mb MAin memory and *4*Mb VRAM set-up.

If you knew even a little about computer architecture you would begin to have some idea of what XBox is capable of, you just need to look at the launch titles (Halo in particular), and compare them with PS2 launch titles to see that XBox has a considerable technological advantage.

I haven't played any of them, but DOA3, Halo, Project Gotham and Madden are all good games according to the reviewers, with SC2 and Jet Set Future on the way, along with the likes of Shenmue 2 and 3, you cannot say it is lacking in good titles.

The geforce inside the X-Box makes me drool.

Bodhi ps2 will do quite well this xmas, and rightly it should with the game backing it up currently. Next xmas with all three consoles will be a different story.

It runs a 733Mhz Pentium 3 with 128K of L2 cache. Which is more widely known as a Celeron. If i remeber correctly, NV3 was the Riva 128 or TNT. The GPU in Xbox is the NV2X, which is a GF3 without a TnL unit, so its a crippled GF3.

I'm not disputing the fact that Xbox is more powerful than PS2, but to be fair, it is over 18 months older, so it does quite a good job considering. What I AM disputing, is the fact that the games for Xbox (with the exception of Halo, which will be out on PC soon) look very very shit. Repeat ad nauseum "Good graphics doth not make a good game".

If you knew even a little about computer architecture you would begin to have some idea of what XBox is capable of

So regular BSOD's (they are Green on xbox, as shops with demo units found out), patches, driver updates and an inferior gaming experience to proper consoles?

Next xmas with all three consoles will be a different story.

Aye it will. The Nintendo faithful will buy Gamecubes, Most of the rest of the population will buy a PS2, and Mr N Smith of Cheadle will buy an Xbox.

Hey! I was born in Cheadle and I don't know any N Smith. This leads me to believe that your facts are incorrect.

Why does the X-Box need a memory card if it has a Hard Drive built in:confused:

the Bod is damn right. The X-Box is crippled. The demo ones simply jammed and displayed customer help numbers (lol). The X-Box is rumoured to be crippled with motherboard faults, although these may now have been fixed. . .and the geforce3 is crippled.

The X-Box has raw power but it isnt designed properly. It is amazing to think that the Gamecube is in raw figures way underpowered, but still runs faster that the X-Box, capable of lots more lovely polygons and fps.

Already many multi platform developers have confirmed that the Gamecube version will be the best looking and fastest version of their game, whilst the X-Box version will be more like the PS2 version. Also whilst the X-Box has a hard disk to minimize load times, the Gamecube has miniscule loading times, so small that developers are actually making them artificially longer after testers said they "didnt feel right".

Also:
Look at the X-Box. Its big, black chunky, has a god awful looking controller and just looks. . .well. . mircosoftish. The Gamecube is shorter than the Gameboy colour. Small, stylish and a launch price of just 200quid (tbc)

I think what he's trying to say is it lasts you a set amount of time, as most console games do, ffs most gamming adverts even say over 40 hours gameplay ect.....

No mods, no tc's, just be ready with your next 40 quid in hand for the next 40 hours of gamplay:p

For the time being it looks as though Sony's runaway success will keep the Xbox at bay. No matter how good the Xbox's games are.

What I have issue with is the way people seem to think the GameCube will lead the Xbox. The GameCube has to be the most underwhelming console ever from my point of view, Xbox has a much better initial line up. The only points I can see Nintendo having in their favour are a cheaper price, a loyal Nintendo fanbase and everyone elses ill-conceived notion that the Xbox is evil because it's by Microsoft and that it will constantly crash.

The ironic thing is when we had a GameCube in the office last month it actually kept crashing whilst running Luigi's Mansion...

Personally I'm going to be getting an Xbox on European release day, because it has games I want to play: JSR Future; Project Gotham and Dead Or Alive 3. Three AAA titles, all you need at launch.

I'll wait for GameCube to have some games I want to play before buying, and no, that doesn't include re-workings of old PSone Resident Evil titles - I'm not fucking stupid Nintendo, give me NEW games please!

Rant over
