Things have taken a very bad turn recently. I don't usually take part in all the crap that goes on between clans and leagues, I like be a roamer and play the game for what it is: a game. I'm not a good player by any standards compared to the likes of FED (DM) and SPKS (CTF) but I like think I have fun and enjoy a good runaround. Hence the reason why I play lithium. DM isn't shit. Its the basis for all q2 gameplay, the tactics, the RJ the comms etc. But Lithium has a hook and runes. "ooh wow" I hear u murmur. Well, until u play the damn thing for as long as any of the members of the UKLL have then I'm afraid u're talkin out yer ass. The mod rocks. Get a good clanbase together and get yer shit nailed down and theres nothing quite like it. Remember kids, this is just my opinion. Knocking a player out there air with a well placed rail whilst they're flyin across the arena in DM1 is ace. Actually mamaging to get to all the right items and getting tooled up and fraggin the git that has the strune is a major deal and is well respected when done. It takes a great deal of time and skill to get to any sort of playable level in lithium cos u got more than rj's and quad whoring to worry about.
This brings me onto a recent game between Agent and clan i. I'm a quiet member of i and was mortified to hear the result of one friendly that took place recently between the clans. From what I understand there was a DM league game between said 2 clans of Division5E in the UKCCL. I quote from K, leader of clan i and head of the UKLL: "
They were a true DM side, and beat us heavily on dm6, but we respected their performance, and were outclassed."
Fair enough. Now thats a good attitude to have. But what conspired next kind of destroyed all that.
The CCL game had been called off and Agent came into the channel and asked for a friendly. A server was setup and well, i'll quote again. From K:
"Bit of humming, but he agreed and I set up a server.
I'll be honest, I have NEVER in my year of playing q2, seen such a bunch of wankers in all my life. For a full 5 minutes, moan, whinge, "Lithium sucks", "Lithium is gay", "You Lithium llamas", "We 0wned you at DM, and we'll 0wn you at Lithium", "We aint playing this map (dm3), cause you'll only quad wh0re us", and this went on. And on. And on, until finally the game on dm3 began.
To put it mildly, I think we went about 50-3 up in the first 4 minutes, so what happened? More insults, more abuse, more slagging off.
I couldn't be arsed with this. I started playing in the online community for fun, a laugh, a joke, and now running this league hopefully gives others the chance to enjoy this too. But with such mindless idiots roaming the servers these days, it's starting to feel different."
Has the state of the community really got to this stage? I was supporting Durz in what he was saying about the whole BW thing that has transpired recently. All respect to BW for getting where they have. They've been here since day one and have (apart from Lithium) been the forefront for most of the big mods. hell, they even setup an Alliance Server for q3 when I asked for one. Shame it hasn't taken off as well as anticipated but thats another story.
Thing is, Durz is in Agency. I always had a picture of Durz being a stand up player who had respect for ALL players and mods out there. Same goes for Stu and marky. They don't know who the hell I am but I am fully aware of who's who. I've been playing this godforsaken game for over 2ys now. Check the CLQ for evidence, scores are crap but the history is there.
We really need to sirt all this shit out. Bring back the respect for clans. Stop the winging and start focusing on whatever its is about quake2 that u like, not what u dislike. Support the newbies, don't use bots and in the word of the immortal Jack Nicholson in Mars Attacks: "Can't we all just get along?"
