WSAECONNRESET

Hey guys,

Well, the next victim of WSAECONNRESET will at least get a 'hit' on the various search engines, for I haven't got a SINGLE hit on WSAECONNRESET apart from the Microsoft site, with a general description which doesn't apply to my situation. People I've spoken to, and I've spoken to a lot of people about this - know NOTHING of the error.

The error occurs when I join games, some, not all of them. Luckily it doesn't occur on BW servers. It also occurs when I host a MOD, like Action Quake. It will run okayish and then BLAM - You get something like this :

********************
ERROR: NET_GetPacket: WSAECONNRESET from 1.2.3.4:27910
********************

Now I know the typical deductive way people like to address vague problems like this ("You've got cable? Yes? Well THERE'S your problem!" (and if I said ISDN, it would've been THAT problem. And if I said modem, or African tam-tam, it would've been that problem)), but I want a practical solution to make this error disappear.

Here's some specs for you to work with : Running Windows 2000 Professional on a decent system, cable connection (Realtek 8139 10/100 on COM21 cablemodem). Running a firewall, however without firewall I get the same error. I can connect to Quake III Arena games just fine. Same goes for Counter-strike.

Need more info? Just ask, I'm at a loss here :)

Why does the quake2.uk post get hundreds of replies and a constructive posting like this previous one gets none besides myself?

Come on lads, at least some of you should know the answer to this problem!

WSAECONNECTRESET

I'm having this same problem on my LAN at home. I removed IPX from one of the two pc's that i use and that seems to have fixed it. I still get kicked out though when i do a "Join..." from the Multiplayer menu on one of the pc's. But if i use the "connect server" command i can play.
I'm going to do some more testing tonight.

Have you learned anymore about this problem?

PS I was in Swedan and Denmark last summer and had a great time. I hope to return some day and also visit the Netherlands!!

I used to get WSAE errors ages ago, I *think* I narrowd it down to my o/c'd Voodoo1 overheating, cos then went away when I left the cover off my PC n went away when I got V2 SLI :/, but this was round when q2 was released so it could have been a dodgy point release causing it:/.

just make sure your sys isn't overheating, and mebbie try re-installing windows / q2 and make sure u d/l all the latest drivers for youre boards.

oops, still a bit mullered from last night, remembered what it means now :)

WSAECONNRESET is an error code returned by the WSAGetLastError() call, and basically means connection reset by peer. (I was getting it on an app I wrote a while back when I tried to run it on NT5), anyway, this means that the client vanished or deliberately aborted the TCP stream rather than closing it gracefully, (mostly due to clients crashing or being aborted in the middle of a dialogue with nnrpd), which means it's prolly a basic prob with youre sys, drivers/overheating/dodgy win install :/ rather than q2 itself being fuxx0red.

thx.

Yeah, I found the error message on Microsofts knowledge base. It's definitly a network error. The problem is all other connectivity works except q2. It's the q2 stream that is interupted only. I've found that it may be related to win2k and will be installing sr2 for win2k tonight. I'll let you know if it fixes the problem.

Thanks for your help!

I know, I've checked the knowledge base as well. Ok so it's a network problem, but every single time I reinstall Win2k, it gives me this sh***. (Slang English word for doody :D ) Service Pack 1, 2.. It doesn't matter :/ . If it doesn't exist in W98 but it does exist in Win2K, my suspicions lie with the OS itself. A friend of mine has the same problem after installing Win2k.

I'm back to Win98 now, not that I really like it but at least now I can play games (as long as my new ASUS V7700 Geforce2 GTS doesn't crash/freeze my system every 5-10 minutes *)....

* This is another NICE problem. I installed Detonator drivers and dxuninstalled Directx 8.0. DX8.0 is CRAP, utter, vile CRAP. Well, at least for Win2k. So I figure the same for Win98, anyway I tried uninstalling with dxu*.* , don't know exact name. Reinstalled Dx7.0a which I had backupped somewhere (lucky me). No go. Freeze, freeze, freeze! Also,

VIPER 550 TNT 16 MB PCI -> 40 fps
ASUS V7700 GEFORCE2 GTS 32 MB AGO -> 45-50 fps

^ Quake III Arena, Q3Tourney4, top level, in the corner of mega/red armor + 640x480 (res) lightmap (mode). Go figure.
I tried setting AGP to 2x, with NVMAX. It seems to work, but I don't get much higher fps rates.

Mainboard = MSI K7PRO IR3.
Proc = AMD 700 MHz.
Mem = 256 MB.

My problem with wsaeconnreset seems to be better after installing SP2. Keep in mind i'm not playing online but on my lan. Part of the problem is q2's internal lan protocol handling. When I get the error message in q2 it says that it can't find an address that is displayed like an IPX (Novell) address. This tells me that q2 is trying to connect via ipx by default. The thing is I don't run IPX. Is IPX the default protocol for q2, I dont know? And thats the problem, where is information on how q2 trys to make the initial connection? (Probably not out there since most people have moved on to q3). What is the algorithym for connectivity? :/

I suspect that q2 may need to be modified to handle some suttle changes in the networking portion of win2k. But that probably won't happen since q3 is the latest. Having said all of that, it works good enough that (at least at this point) I'll stay with win2k. Are you running on a LAN or playing online when u have the problem?

Regarding directx8, thx for the heads-up, i was just getting ready to install it on a friends machine. The bad news is that Microsoft says you CANT uninstall it. Check the readme file for details. I'm not an expert on it but I do remember the uninstalling part. Is that what dxu*.* is for? Is dxu*.* a microsoft product?

Cant help u much with the q3 problem, i'm primarilly a q2 and network person. I don't have much knowledge on your equipment. In general, and u probably already know, that using the latest drivers can help. But u also know that they sometimes suck!
