Actually these are a lot closer to the trolls and kobolds of folk tales and other more modern works of fantasy.
The common belief was that trolls were not made of stone, but made of flesh and blood, but could be turned to stone when exposed to the light of the sun.
Kobolds were always supposed to be more canine than they are in daoc. The daoc kobolds are a lot more akin to goblins.
