I have to go back to work in the Ivory Coast at the end of the month.
This News Report indicates that there may well be a civil war again.
I would only be actually 'in' the country overnight when I arrived, then I would go offshore to the rig. on the way home its an afternoon and evening in Abidjan before flying up to Paris.
Question is would you go ?

Ask Kenny about it. His work have lots of dealings with Africa, and the Ivory Coast is mentioned a fair bit. There's an off chance he might know something about whether people consider it safe to go there for business. Probably not, but worth a go.

Thanks Damini,
I will go in any case, unless Air France stop flying there. The question was more along the lines of 'knowing there may well be a shooting war taking place in the country you have to go to work in would you still go ?'
I probably did not phrase it too well, and up to yesterday the Foreign and Commonwealth Office were saying it is fine to travel there on business, just do not go to the North where the rebels are, it now says don't go at all.

fuck it, just go for the experience. Ask your company what security they have in place, and what insurance cover they have in the event something happens (which is extremely unlikely).

Remember, most insurance policies are void in warzones, I don't know if the area you'll be visiting is a warzone.

Mind you, I could probably get to Iraq, and earn a grand a day doing it, but fuck that shit.

Yup Gengi, just don't go up north. Abidjan should be fine and you probably wouldn't even know there's a civil war going on. The army are bombing sites up north which is quite some distance away ;).

Especially if you're only going to be there a night or so. The only problem I could forsee is flights being altered.

I'd go.

It seems like there isn't that much risk involved. And if I got shot, I wouldn't care to much. I'd be dead or under anaesthetic in some hospital even if I did get shot anyway. Dieing painfully could be abit of a bummer, but the chances of that are even slimmer.

It'd be my family who suffered because of it. But they'd get over it and get on with life.

That is actually my worst nightmare :) I am due to get off on the 22nd of December to put me home in time for Xmas, flights being screwed up is depressing :(

I heard that the UN safty council had a meeting about this, and that french UN troops had skirmishes with regular troops. it's your call, but tbh you should calculate in that you may not be home in time for xmas mate.

For £500 p/w no, for £5k week yes.
I wouldn't go for £500 week if it was peaceful though, looks like a shithole.

The French Peace Keeping forces destroyed the bulk of the Ivorian Airforce 2 jets and three of their helicopter gunships that had been used in an attack against a French outpost.
And if I don't get home for Xmas I should at least make a few more quid :)

thanks for the replies people.

Not to dampen your spirits but I hear there's also been some outbreaks of fighting around the airport in Abidjan. Lots of people with lots of machette's apparently in retaliation for that bombing I mentioned in my last post.

Yes I saw that on the Beeb, 10,00 machete weilding Ivorians would not make a nice welcoming commitee :) especially flying in o Air France :eek6:
Still it is a couple of weeks before I have to go it may well have calmed down by then.

Is this some sort of mating ritual I should be aware of?

Ok I came, had to fly in through Ghana, as Air France had suspended their flights to Abidjan. Not a bad trip down, what little I saw of both Ghana and the Ivory Coast was quie pleasant, a much better first impression than Nigeria :).
So when we get to the Hotel in Ghana I asked the manager if our company insurance was valid for working in the Ivory Coast, I had figured that anything I had at home, insurance wise, would be void as I was going to a country that the Foreign and Commonwealth Office had said not to go to and where we had evacuated people from recently.
He said he didn't know, that was 10 days ago, I asked again, when he came to visit yesterday, and there is now apparently an answer that is being 'reviewed' by some people in town (not Abidjan :) )
Life in the Oil field can be interesting at times.
