Wot to do instead?

Been playing DAOC for close to 3 years i think. I still get a huge buzz from playing mainly stealthers in Thid after all this time. I desperately want to stop playing this game but need something to replace it with.

My background is in computer technology - a technician. Considering programming now which i think could replace the intensity of the game (hopefully). Any programmer out there with some tips on how to start? Which introductory course to try or which language to specialize in?

The requirements are that my brain is occupied with interesting concepts and the end goal is something worth the effort.

A mate of mine is in a similar postition, he is currently teaching himself VB and doing some stuff with visual studio, if your used to working with windows apparently this is pretty straight forward, as you can kinda relate to most things going on, or so he tells me. I have had a look at some of the material he is working on and it all seems pretty interesting.

It may be more geared toward a techie as you can get to grips with techie stuff and coding, if that makes sense? as opposed to learning fresh your learning arround something you already find familiar. (like learning VB script but for sys admin tasks) Kinda made me want to look into it, but i decided to spend time doing something un techie and nothing to do with me PC
