128bit security is fine, and on my router you can grant access to only specific MAC addresses for wireless

Its unlikely there is anyone else in your area with wireless.

My WEP is currently turned off cos I can't be bothered to switch it back on at the moment and there is no one using it. :)

-----------------

If you do still want wires you need either:

  • 2x computers
  • 2x Network Cards
  • A twisted pair cable to connect between the two PC's

Though if you want to share an internet connection (ADSL or CM) I'd recommend:

  • 2x Computers
  • 2x Network Cards
  • 1x Hub with a WAN port, like this
  • 2x Normal ethernet cables.

The 2nd list would allow either machine to access an ADSL/CM link without having to have the host machine running, also you can share resources such as printers...

I would still recommend wireless, but the choice is yours...

wireless is very handy in home situations, no need to drill through walls and floors, and having to rip up carpets to lay cable :) it may be expensive but its good point is you dont have to troubleshoot broken cables when someone accidentally lays it over the carpet grabbers

Securing it is a 5 minute job, its relatively secure (only die-hard hackers will sit and crack it if they really want into your network, which i doubt since you arnt a high-end business with black spots on its record) the "security issues" are only there because high-end companies dont do security
(prime example, FG Wilsons in Northern ireland, wireless on the factory floor, it was unsecured and broadcasting default settings for a while)

the SMC barracade is an excellent piece of kit, it also comes with a Parallel port print server on it so your printer will work even with only one computer on :D

if you got a modem on the back of the machine, replace the SMC Barracade option with a 4port hub from Netgear, their 10 base-T hubs come in at around £30 :)

Well I use the SMC SMC7004AWBR.

Very easy to setup, 128bit WEP support, built in firewall and a WAN port and 3x LAN ports

Question is do you have ADSL/CM or modem...

As for Wireless PCI cards, I'm not sure I used an SMC2602W but its range is a bit dodgy when compared to my Tellus, PCMCIA card.

I have that wireless router but I wouldn't get it as its range is a little short, Linksys wireless routers have a good range from what I've seen.

I use the Intel Anypoints, expensive but foolproof and reliable. Unless your d/l something stupid like child pr0n then I wouldnt give a fuck about security issues
