world war 2

Because of my abnormal obsession with WW2 I was just wondering if anybody had any interesting stories about the war from their dads, grandfathers, great grandfathers whatever.
My grandad was in the BEF, and was at the evacuation of Dunkirk, then came up through Africa after D-day.
A friend of mines mother was one of the workers with the damn busters squadron and said that Gibson was an absolute twat and the best thing about him was his strangely named dog, and he actually missed the damn himself, the only people who hit the damn were the ones who didn't make it back.

So any interesting stories?

My grandad flew Mosquito's (recon ones, before they got guns) to recce parts of French and Holland c1943. Never got into any scrapes coz the Mossy was so bloody fast. Gave the royal V to any approaching 109's and scarpered :)

But he wasn't flying recon over Germany in 1944/5, because thats the only places where the 262 was based, and besides, there was only a handful of 262's anyway.

A year earlier and they MIGHT have made the war last a bit longer.

My grandad told me some interesting stories like when he saw some bomb disposal experts get blown up in Busy park (think it was that one).

Although one of my favourite DVD box sets has to World At War....all 10 DVDs.

I died in World War Two. Then I had sex.

I did neither of these again.

There, I've added some mirth to your quasi-depressing thread :)

My uncle was on the U.S.S. Indianapolis., he told me this story once.... (He likes to call me chief),

Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into our side, chief. It was comin' back, from the island of Tinian Delady, just delivered the bomb. The Hiroshima bomb. Eleven hundred men went into the water. Vessel went down in twelve minutes. Didn't see the first shark for about a half an hour. Tiger. Thirteen footer. You know, you know that when you're in the water, chief? You tell by lookin' from the dorsal to the tail. Well, we didn't know. `Cause our bomb mission had been so secret, no distress signal had been sent. Huh huh. They didn't even list us overdue for a week. Very first light, chief. The sharks come cruisin'. So we formed ourselves into tight groups. You know it's... kinda like `ol squares in battle like a, you see on a calendar, like the battle of Waterloo. And the idea was, the shark nearest man and then he'd start poundin' and hollerin' and screamin' and sometimes the shark would go away. Sometimes he wouldn't go away. Sometimes that shark, he looks right into you. Right into your eyes. You know the thing about a shark, he's got... lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eye. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be livin'. Until he bites ya and those black eyes roll over white. And then, ah then you hear that terrible high pitch screamin' and the ocean turns red and spite of all the poundin' and the hollerin' they all come in and rip you to pieces. Y'know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men! I don't know how many sharks, maybe a thousand! I don't know how many men, they averaged six an hour. On Thursday mornin' chief, I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland. Baseball player, bosom's mate. I thought he was asleep, reached over to wake him up. Bobbed up and down in the water, just like a kinda top. Up ended. Well... he'd been bitten in half below the waist. Noon the fifth day, Mr. Hooper, a Lockheed Ventura saw us, he swung in low and he saw us. He'd a young pilot, a lot younger than Mr. Hooper, anyway he saw us and come in low. And three hours later a big fat PBY comes down and start to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened? Waitin' for my turn. I'll never put on a lifejacket again. So, eleven hundred men went in the water, three hundred and sixteen men come out, the sharks took the rest, June the 29, 1945. Anyway, we delivered the bomb.

Greetings folk I am here :)
My grandad was an MP, I remember a tale about shooting some germans that had escaped on a stolen horse (hehe-absolutely true ). He didnt seem to mind the fact that he shot them in the least, which I think tells a tale of how different things were in them days. Dont know much about his war exploits, he died in 1976 when i was only 12 or so .

My grandad joined the Merchant Navy during the war, after he had gained his apprenticeship on one of the Clydeside yards (might have been John Browns).

I dont really know much more than that as by time I was old enough to take any sort of proper interest in that he was in the advanced stages of Parkinson's Disease and it was hard to have a meaningful conversation with him :(

He was a really clever man tho, I mind reading an old newspaper cutting about how he had tried to prove how much the world is growing to rely on numbers.
What he done was write a letter to himself and put it in a stamped envolope with only his NI number on it, to see if it would still get back to him and sure enough, it did.

My maternal grandfather broke his back prior to the war, this excluded him from front-line service but instead put him into the Air Raid Patrol (ARP), he spent most of the war years in London being bombed, scraping burning nalpalm of walls, and digging bodies sans limbs out of rubble, one might wonder if he actually got a better job.

My paternal grandfather was in the RAF as a cook, he probably killed more of our guys than the germans ever could :)

I'm playing World War II Online at the moment, plenty of war stories (real and virtual) over there.

The "problem" with the Me262 was that Hitler had decreed all future designs must be capable of carrying bombs, anticipating that by then Germany would have air superiority and faster fighters would not be needed, this completely buggered the design of the Me262, as a fighter/interceptor role it would have excelled.

I forgot to tell you about my grandads story. Like so many however I never had chance to talk to him about it as he died before I took any interest.
During a battle he was shot, in the buttocks, and had to recover for a few days while his wound healed. During this time his entire squad was wiped out in an ambush, had he not been shot he'd have been killed along with them, then I wouldn't be here so it wouldn't all have been bad news.

I read the whole bit about "Jaws" as "Jews" ... it seemed just as appropriate, given the thread.
