World has seriously gone mental these past weeks:

The car bomb in Bali

The Sniper

And now guerrillas have siezed a theatre in Moscow with over 700 hostages (1,000 i think is the count).

They're going to be sending in the crack "alpha" team in. To be honest, I'm suprised something like this hasnt happened in Russia before, I suppose it was a matter of time :(

I just hope the situation is resolved and the hostages live.

Heres the customary link

apparently Russia have a competent special ops groups, Spetznatz or something. Only reason why their not excellent is because (last i heard) its a time served basis. Most people in the SAS have served for 6 years and are already corporal etc. Russian ones dont have the same number of years of service or the experience.

nah

Spetsnaz isn't one of the line units that have conscripts, it's one of the ones that actually get to keep people... and according to mah da, while they may not be the best equipped SOG in the world, they are one of the toughest and the best trained.

afghanistan kinda sees to that, among other places

FBI HRT are more civilian than the Military based response teams. Hence why i believe the military sorts would have more training.

hah!

hence why the HRT usually succeeds in successful recoveries with no casualties. and indeed, SBS and SAS would kick all their asses... if they were there.. which they aren't. if you wanted to get all tom clancy about it, they could send in Rainbow :p

I've got a book on the SAS, and the training they do; I also recently saw a programme on the Delta Force training, and it was much less than the SAS go through.

SBS beat the SAS more than 50% of the time when they are put in war games against each other, altho to be fair these are usually marine based so the SBS have an advantage.

I had a really good post last night.....then the computer crashed

anyway, more info. These guys appear to be suicide bombers, demanding the withdrawl of Russian troops and they are threatening to blow the building up and everyone in it. Question is, are they serious and if they are then why haven't they already done the deed? There was a large blast heard coming from inside the building this morning.

They've also let muslims and foreigners lose so this would appear to be a Chechen operation and not an Al Qaeida (SP?). Somebody will still try to blame the Al Qaeida I bet

Its not exactly the best method for stopping a war? The government is more inclined to send in the Alpha team rather than actually withdrawing their troops. Leader said that he'd kill ten hostages for each of his killed, which will complicate matters if they botch up the exctraction operation.

Apparently they've also rigged the building to blow with mines, has to be a strategists worst nightmare I'm guessing.

Read this today on the Moscow Post website. Crazy...

Reuters press report: 10/24/02 - 10.06 am MST

By Danovic Randerovsky.

Moscow Bombers not gamers

Leading KGB investigator in the Moscow Bomber drama, Davidovitch Cartowitzky, today denied that the terrorists who are terrorising Moscow residents for the last two days are devotees of the on-line fighting game “counter-strike”. “I’ve played this game myself and to link the two is completely preposterous”.

The game, which allows on-line gamers to realistically fight each other with authentically engineered weapons – as terrorists or counter-terrorists, has been blamed in the last few days by numerous sources for having a definite connection to the terrorist actions

“you can use a bomb in this game, and it is our view that the Moscow terrorists are almost certainly avid players of this game who has taken his obsession into the real world.” Said Harveyitri Winkleorsky of the MAVG (Muscovites Against Violent Games) organisation. “It should be banned.”

Agent Cartowitzky said yesterday “They (the terrorists) are lame-ass n00bs who won’t blow anything up if they don’t plant the bomb ffs!!1. They should tell the person who’s got the bomb that the bombsite is clear. Mind you he’s prolly lagged somewhere to be fair.”

Later that afternoon it was reported that hostages were heard to mutter “get me outta here”

Negative Wolfeeh.

Where the people in Spetsnaz may be good soldiers, the conditions in Russia do not adequately prepare them for "SAS" type activities.

Low morale, low food allocations, poor training facilities.... etc all lead to bad tactics.

While they may get a result during this rescue bid, it may boil down to "luck" more than good planning.

As for Delta Force!! :puke:

Typical American bullshit. Delta force rely more on muscle and state of the art technology for their soldiers out in the field.

Apparently the delta forces would have a hard time keeping up with the SBS/SAS

I love the way people argue about "which Special Forces teams are the best". Bit like "which martial art is the best".

Clearly, Cobra Commander > all

what about the SEALs? I hear they are meant to be pretty damn good, have no idea what their track record is like though, can only base it on what I've read in books.
