A 28-year-old woman found dead hours after taking part in a radio station's water drinking contest died of water intoxication, the coroner's office said Saturday.

Assistant Sacramento County Coroner Ed Smith said a preliminary investigation found evidence "consistent with a water intoxication death."

Jennifer Strange's mother found her daughter's body at her home Friday in the Sacramento suburb of Rancho Cordova after Strange called her supervisor at her job to say she was heading home in terrible pain.

"She said to one of our supervisors that she was on her way home and her head was hurting her real bad," said Laura Rios, one of Strange's co-workers at Radiological Associates of Sacramento. "She was crying and that was the last that anyone had heard from her."

Earlier Friday, Strange took part in a contest at radio station KDND 107.9 in which participants competed to see how much water they could drink without going to the bathroom.

Initially, contestants were handed eight-ounce bottles of water to drink every 15 minutes.

"They were small little half-pint bottles, so we thought it was going to be easy," said fellow contestant James Ybarra of Woodland. "They told us if you don't feel like you can do this, don't put your health at risk."

Ybarra said he quit after drinking five bottles. "My bladder couldn't handle it anymore," he added.

After he quit, he said, the remaining contestants, including Strange, were given even bigger bottles to drink.

"I was talking to her and she was a nice lady," Ybarra said. "She was telling me about her family and her three kids and how she was doing it for kids."

The winner of the "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest was promised a Nintendo Wii video game system.

John Geary, vice president and marketing manager for Entercom Sacramento, the station's owner, said station personnel were stunned when they heard of Strange's death.

"We are awaiting information that will help explain how this tragic event occurred," he said.

Pure water will kill you a lot faster, since it removes salts and minerals from your body. Pure water (also known as demineralised water, or distilled water), as in pure H2O is just plain toxic.

experiments in animals have repeatedly shown that the intake of demineralized water leads to diuresis (increased urination caused by substances present in the kidney tubules), extra cellular fluid volume and serum concentration of sodium and chlorine ions and their increased elimination from the body, lower volumes of red blood cells and other hematocritic changes (alteration of the number of red blood cells)

In other words... You're dehydrating yourself due to drinking demiwater, because it removes the salts which your body needs to contain the water out of your system.

and about drinking regular water... If you drink too much of it it becomes toxic aswell. This is called hyperhydration. I don't know the exact process in this and can't be arsed to look it up but there's enough info on it on the internet. Just search for hyperhydration and you'll probably find enough.

In hyperhydration the quality of the water doesn't matter much. It's the fact that you drink that amount in a certain timeframe. (quality within reasonable limits ofcourse.)

after 5 bottles, that is 1h15 minutes, the amount went up. We don't know how much and how fast the remaining participants drank it.

So you drink a lot of water _AND_ you don't go to the toilet... pretty soon the cells in your body reach their saturationpoint...

theres no way in hell i'd go in to a contest like this because anyone whos chatted with me on msn for more than 30mins knows i am a frequent wee'er, though if there was a contest to see who could pee the most from drinking the least i'd win i do about 4 wee's per bottle of beer and the rate of weeage increases with each drink.

actually its not funny im a prisoner to my bladder
