Wireless stuff

I have a wireless access point plugged into my hub upstairs in my office.

I bought a wireless card for my laptop, and it works very well in the office (means I have no wires trailing round).

But... if i go downstairs with it, I lose connection, which sort of defeats the object. I'm not talking about a mansion or anything, just a normal 4 bedroom house.

Is this likely to be the card or the access point?

The access point is a Netgear ME102 and the card is an ActionTec jobby (both 802.11b).

I've tried repositioning the access point and aerials to no avail.

Any ideas, tips?

Cheers

Well i highly doubt if it is a hardware problem that it is the Netgear access point as they are a very good reliable make.

To see if it is that or your card, borrow? one from a friend or something and try that. It could be that one or the other bits are busted/low quality or you may have a lead lined office

I agree, Ive been using a Netgear Wireless modem/router along with an ME101 Bridge. I to live in a 4 bedroom house and signal strength is strong, with th router upstairs and the bridge downstairs . Our house is fairly new and so doesnt have solid walls throughout like older houses. The prescence of many solid walls can cut the signal range away down, though should still be fine in your house.

My tendancy would be to stick to the same manufacturers when going wireless, as Ive heard a few makes are not fully compatible even if they use the same protocol.

you could try the baked can bean mod.....you make a directed antenna using a baked bean can...will apparently focus your network upto a mile directionally...its not an attractive piece of hardware tho  I think I saw it in this forum earlier this year..

I think I'll pass on the baked bean tin idea

I've bought myself a DLink DSL-604+ today anyway... mainly because I like the idea of an all-in-one ADSL modem/router/hub/wireless jobby rather than the 3 bits of kit I currently use.

Will update after I get a chance to install it.
