Over the past week, I've set myself up a wireless network, and I'm amazed with the amount of unsercure networks within the area I can pick up, just wondering if anyone else has the same thing around them?

I think its quite funny in this day n age where everyone is all high on sercurity, as you can just freely connect and use their internet on 2 of them near me, anyone else able to have free access to the internet? :p

Not sure if its a matter of cluelessness or lack of knowledge on their part. :p

1 : get a laptop with a wireless network card
2 : get netstumbler or a similar product
3 : take a ride in your car to the nearest city of yours and be amazed of the open networks

i did that in copenhagen and i can only say ...wauw!

Manufactures really need to put out of box security on these things, most people who install wireless products don't have a clue how to configure them, even in most small companies. I think maybe i should start a small business venture offering to configure wireless security for people at 50 quid a pop, it would only take about 10 minutes on each router.

Had to go on a training course north of london last month, in the hotel there were 5 other wireless networks within range, 4 of which were unsecured.

Traveled to paris last week, hotel there had 8 avaliable throughout the evening

I have a wireless network at home, which uses WPA, and its only switched on when I need to use the laptop downstairs - paranoid me nahh :)

ever see exceptionally rich lookin korean kids sat outside the big Hotels up town, with a laptop on there knees and think, "What an odd place to use your 'puter..."

business types staying in hotels in London love wireless, but know very little :D

The other one is Bluetooth - sit on a bus full of school-kids and scan for bluetooth connections :puke:

Bought a Belkin ADSL Modem/Router, came with very good and easy to understand instructions and a CD with an even better manual on it.

Think your right tho, maybe they should start shipping these types products with a random key which is on the back of the manual or something which the user could change if they choose, at least this way their network would be protected from the start. Random one would be better then a standard one for all products as alil help from google is bound to find standard info on stuff. :)

alot of people dont bother changing passwords and usernames on their routers either, so can just login easily (standard login/pass is admin/admin or admin/password i believe :eek7: )

happened to a friend, his neighbour logged in to his router (thinking it was his new one) and changed loads of settings and the password, had quite a laugh about it afterwards though :p

Wardriving ftw!! :)

There aren't any wifi's near mine as far as I know sadly :( And most people only use minor encryption, like WEP 64 bit keys which aren't that hard to crack if you can stay in range of the network for some time.
The manufacturers should make a more noob-friendly setup process imo, same with wifi-routers, by enabling at least 128 bit WEP or WPA as standard option.
Most of those network noobies just follow the setup and when it works, that's fine for them, they won't take a look at the configuration options, so force them to enter a password unless they disable it themselves in the config.

TBH think most people not arsed, but they should be if someones downloading dodgy stuff over your link then they'll come looking for you.

Actually everyone should install an unsecured wireless link, then you can blame the lot on someone else.
