Wireless network.

Being a country boy stuck on 56k :( I dont really know the answer to this one, so I open it to the community.

Ive searched and saw Embeh's thread which recommended a router, but dosnt really answer the question fully.

Question:
My friend has NTL 1mb cable. The modem lives downstairs in his 2 story detatched house. He would like to network his PC's, wirelessly, but he would prefer to NOT have a PC in his hallway, where the modem lives.

Now, correct me if Im wrong, but cant he use a router, similar to the one Embattle mentions, and plug his modem into that, then use WiFi cards in his PC's to connect to the network? If this is the case, does he install some software onto one of his PC's from which he would "manage" the router?

Anyone know of any decent, easily understandable websites which explain the procedure for networking NTL, since Im told it can be a bit of a biatch?

Cheers chaps,

Wilier.

That is correct wil.

His best bet would be to buy a wireless router with built in dsl modem which will auto dial his ISP.

He won't need software to configure the router as it should have a web server built in so to speak. I.e he would access the router through an internet browser usually at the ip 192.168.0.1

The router should work "out of the box" but as leggy says, you can alter the settings with a web browser, or telnet into the router if you need advanced options.

He'll have to enter his ISP username and passy into the router though. If he isn't on cable that is.

Yeah, silly me. Doesn't cable rock?

I did have to spoof a MAC address to get mine to work, so I suppose I didn't have internet access straight away either. But the LAN side of things will work out of the box.

The first time I set mine up, I configured it with a laptop and a serial cable...talk about doing things the hard way.
