:(...

Yesterday (Tuesday) i got a new motherboard and had to reinstall WinXP.... i did that but now i found that after every hour or so my internet just disconnects itself (Even tho it says its connected). I have to disconnect and reconnect but the chances of me staying online for an extra 5mins are usually slim.

I know its not BTo, because they was fine during the day and theres no problems reported so im thinking its somethin to do with the Modem/USB.

Someone said download SP1 for XP, so i go find it, and im like halfway thru it now, because the fuckin speeds are shite - im only getting like -5kbps and like -3kbps upload.

Anyway, every 2mins or so since im downloading SP1, im gettin cutoff so it keeps causing problems gettin SP1 so it feels like im going nowhere. Ive not (foolish) got a Antivirus/Firewall on yet, until tomorrow but anyone know if theres a certain problem and where it lies?

Hi S-Gray

There could potentially be a few problems, the most notable of which are the dial-up, the modem drivers and the connection details/configuration.

The dial-up service you seemed to have ruled out, so fair enough, but it may be worth going to your ISP's websie and looking for a service status page. There may well be a problem with the service which you're suffering at the hands of (if so you'll usually have to wait for your ISP to fix it).

The modem drivers are another potential cause of trouble. Downloading SP1a and any other updates may help, but your best bet in the short term would be to visit your modem manufacturer's website and download the latest drivers for your modem. These ought to be far smaller than SP1a and so you stand a greater chance of being able to download them without being disconnected first.

As for the configuration, if you 'Control Panel' > 'Network Connections' and right-click on your dial-up connection choosing 'Properties' you should be able to view the advanced settings. Make sure the 'Idle time before hang-up' isn't very low and that any other settings which could potentially cause problems aren't an issue.

I'm afraid all this is very general information, and probably won't help. I'd say try and get the latest drivers for your modem first and take it from there. If needs be, use a download manager which will allow you to resume your download even if you are disconnected part way through (such applications can be downloaded or found on many magazine coverdisks).

Kind Regards

If he's having problems downloading SP1, then using a download manager instead of the Windows Update control will mean having to download the entire patch, which is about 130MB.

It sounds to me like a USB problem, investigate your motherboard drivers first.

I did in the end manage to download SP1 (After about 2hrs of standing by the pc reconnecting it)...

Then i found the SP1 wasnt the friggin problem so i did as Jonty said and installed new USB modem drivers... it seems to be ok at the moment, but usually around <xx.40>am/pm and <xx.50>am/pm is when i get disconnected hourly, if i get past that then whoo!

There is a lesson here.... one that I have learnt thru bitter experience. Always install your firewall/AV software first thing after a format.

I formatted my home PC 12 weeks ago and caught W32.Blaster while at the MicroSoft update site. I'd literally only had an internet connection running for 2 minutes and MSUpdate was the only site I had visited.
