Ive been playing quake 3 on the final release, and the *legal* < yeah i bought it > copy of windows 2000 which i purchased last week - and has always been fine with the latest set of drivers for my tnt2u graphics. Seems fine, if not quicker then that "OS" they call windows 98. In all honesty, the only "game" that dont work for me is tomb raider 4 (i only have that because i bought it for a pound) - I have also just filled my 10 gig hard disk, so i may kill off windows 98 once and for all, once Creative release a set of drivers for the Sound blaster Live! cards
Windows 2000 is the first Microsoft operating system i wish to endorse and is certainly worth fishing out 150 quid for. Its quick and reliable (built on NT technology), Easy to use as the Win9x series (if you want it to be) and as flexible and with lots of things to fiddle with as NT.
I like it. A lot. Well done Microsoft, i congratulate you on your first Operating System.
And im not being sarcastic either, as many would originally think.
In my eyes, windows 98 can swivel on its own middle finger, and toss off to the merry tunes of Hell.
Thanks.. I agree Microsoft has finally created an OS.. I mainly had OpenGL problems when installing Quake which couldn't recognize any OpenGL drivers.. Even went from VooDoo 3000 to a Millennium G400 a few months ago on the RC3 release. I’ll retry with the final copy.
Seems like most people are having no probs with Win2K+V3+Q3 , but fer some c**tin reason im not
I'm using Win2k build 2195 (final i think)advanced server on a P3-550 with 128mb RAM
Ive installed the V3 2000 win2k retail drivers from 3dfx.com but afer 30secs or so of gameplay the textures seem to start tearing around me. They dont seem to belong to any objects...just torn textures flickering around the screen and then it locks up completely
I've tried with clean install plus the first patch and the beta patch but same problem every time.
Using the original DX7 with the install(NTFS btw not the FAT option) as i cant find the 7a update for win2k
Anybody havin this same problem or know of a fix?
Hopin to get this sorted as am fed up with 98SE crashes and win2k seems purdy nice except for this
Torn textures like that are normally a sign of overheating. Do you have your Voodoo overclocked? If not, perhaps you need some extra ventilation.
Try running with the cover off for a few days...see what happens.
The only display probs I have, is that, with FastSky set on, the sky is white (In Win98 it was black). This makes messages very hard to read.
To be honest though, I've gone back to running Q3 under Win98. Nothing seems to be wrong under W2K, but it doesn't feel right (plus pings are higher!).
Had suspicions it was overheating..only got the 550 cuz my 450 went pffft (reasons unkown..overheated?)
Prolly cuz case and mobo arent best together and cpu ends up under the powersupply with the hard drive on other side
/me goes lookin fer new fan
V3 isnt overclocked btw..would cpu gettin hot cause tearin as well?

Don't know about the CPU, but if it's hot in that case, the V3 will start to break down.
I installed a UDMA 66 Hard disk, which is great, but the case temperature went up quite a bit (that's when I had the tearing). I fitted extra fans, and everything's back to normal.
if the tearing is down to overheating, it will b the v3 and not cpu. i also have a v3-2000 and have slapped an old socket7 fan on the bottom of the heatsink for extra cooling, as mine is overclocked.
the reason u may only notice this in q3 is that it is particularly demanding on hardware. q3 was the first game where i noticed tearing when i pushed up the clock speed too hi. try running other hardware intensive games (eg UT) and see if it locks up in them too. Tearing and lockups are very strong indicators of overheating, as opposed to driver issues.
Just tries UT and voila..another lockup..didnt notice any tearin beforehand.
Then i went even lower and tried the 3d pinball and hey presto..even it locked up after a while }:<
Can run win2k no probs for ages...Its just anything that even attempts to push the V3 slightly harder than desktop apps
Seriously fecked off now...first cpu goes pffft now my V3 is startin to go pfffft

(fancy one of em ASUS v6600 deluxe type thangs..how much is $299 in pounds
/me wishes)

Just think how fecked off you'll be when the ASUS goes pfft!
I guess you have 2 options....
1 Get some cooling in there
2 Change the V3 (could be flakey).
In fact, do number 1 anyway
Win2000 does seem very tolerant of hardware. If I ramp up my fsb, Win2K just carries on. Win98 curls it's toes up and shuffles off this mortal coil
/<monty_Python_mode off>
I have one and it worked wonders on me old V3 2000... In fact, the V3 2000 was then overclocked to 170MHz core/mem and ran COOLER than at its standard 143MHz with no fan card.
Good shit no doubt, but being the wild slag that I am, I now 0wn a DDR geforce overclocked to fuck instead
