You would of done better to stick this in the OS setion but any way:

XP Pro doesn't have true DOS support and runs it more like an emulation, thus the Command Prompt app.

Use the boot up disc, WIN XP, as you progress you'll be given the option of changing partitions etc. Delete the current partition and recreate it and it'll then be formated.

cheers embattle, just one small thing, its not exactly a "official" copy of XP. There was a way to create a start-up floppy disc with win98, is there the same thing for xp, if so where?

Heh, I don't think anyone seriously expects you to have bought XP...

I don't have XP, but i would say look under the ``utilities'' heading on the start menu(if that doesn't exist, it might be ``accessories'').

www.bootdisk.com is a great website.
There you can create bootdisks via downloading a self extracting file from their website.
And of course. I agree, who would buy XP.
Firstly its crap, slow and crashes games and gives high pings and forces u to use a firewall by default.
Secondly, its over priced and who would want to put more money in the geek boy's pocket.
Not me for sure.
Go to Windows 2000.

Also, if you set your boot devices up in the bios so that CD drive is searched first and put in a windows 98 cd (official or a copy) then it will give you options.
You can then get into dos by that via selecting "Boot from CD" and then "Start computer with CD ROM support" this then takes you to the dos prompt with support to access your CD drive.

Gah! You're wrong on every single count. Except about the firewall part, but not sure if that's on by default.

Actually, on mine the firewall was on by default.
Also, I was not wrong on ANY of my points on my previous post.
As I have explained in another thread I researched WindowsXP thoroughly before making a decision of whether to upgrade.
I decided it wasnt worth it so I installed it on my test machine and ran my usual test. including games.
Half-Life and its MOD's sometimes, not all the time but sometimes came up with the usual error box with only a "close" button, how helpful.
Anyway, My points were correct thank you very much.

This sounded like a statement when infact it was just your opinion since it happened on your computer.

On yours it did on most it doesn't, both my home version and pro version didn't by default.

HL works fine on mine and many others computers.

Overall XP works as fine as W2K did on mine. Although WinXP tends to support my hardware better than W2K did, thats why I use it instead of W2K atm.

XP will work fine on most computers but like any OS you'll get small problems running older programs, this includes HL, and some people will have problems with there setup.

Have to say that I agree with Embattle on this.
I have XP pro on my desktop and on my laptop, both running all programs which 98 used to with no trouble. Ahhhhh except 'Thomas the Tank Engine and friends' which did work, but now for some reason dosnt. but tbh, thats not too big a loss.

Well I have to say that my 386sx16 with 2mb of ram, ega monitor, and windows 3.1, halflife runs stonkingly fast.

I'm thinking of upgrading to a 486 soon - what vesa local bus video card should I get? I have a trident 256 at the moment.

Half-Life runs without problem on Linux.

Yes. And your point is...?

WINE Is simply a compatability layer which allows programs dependant on the windows APIs to run on unix systems(that's from memory, so don't shout if the wine website is slightly differant ;)).

Talking about points do you have one?

If it's something like how great Linux is I fail to see the point of changing just to play HL through WINE when you have windows which plays it without an APi, or glorified emulator.
