Windows XP Home: Serious Stability Issue

XP Home SP1 (Full Install, not update)
768 MB 133 SDRAM
AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1.33Ghz
--Thermaltake Volcano 7+ Cooler
Abit KT7a (1.0~1.2) motherboard

Problem: Running Windows Messenger Voice Chat, chat sometimes cuts out resulting in a freeze of Windows Messenger. It recovers within a few minutes and we carry on. Try voice chat again and the computer cuts out and restarts. On reboot Windows reports that it has "recovered from a serious error".
I've checked the BIOS and the CPU Temp is 50 dC, though it doesn't give a separate reading for the core.

XP is up to date with all patches and Service Pack, I have no idea what is wrong.

Reinstalling really isn't an option right now since I'm in the middleof a uni course and can't give it that much time. It does appear stable when running office and the like.

You could try reinstalling/updating the drivers there, if not, I could dig up a trick to use some Audigy2 drivers on it, apparently that solves a lot of issues.

(Assumes this works for XP Home)

  • Open Control Panel
  • Choose System
  • Click on Advanced Tab
  • Choose Startup and Recovery Settings
  • Untick Automatically Restart
  • OK > Apply > OK

when this problem occurs again it will give you a nice Blue Screen Of Death with a long Stop Code at/near the bottom. Make a note of this and either Google It™ or post back here

Thank you very much Miles. I've checked that and will endevour to recreate the error tomorrow.

It doesn't seem to be a sound issue. I managed to get it to do the same thing when trying to use "Whiteboard".

The system seems to have MASSIVE issues with NetMeeting, both when running it on it's own and when Messenger uses WhiteBoard from it. It usually crashes messenger and sometimes explorer too.

I dont know if this works in xp home, ,but have you tried looking in control panel> admin tools > event log then reporting the system error to m$?

I used to have the same issues with Netmeeting.

I just gave up running it for anything. Its just not worth it.

Right, we have some BSOD action:

First time round I get:

PROCESS_HAS_LOCKED_PAGES
STOP: 0x00000076

I looked it up on Google and it told me the registry setting to get the BSOD to tell me which driver was causing the problem.

I changed the setting and got it up again:

0x000000CB
Referring me to driver "afd.sys"

And so the trail runs a little cold.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

okie, extract that rar to some dir, and put ctcomp.exe in it, then browse to the 'audio/drivers' subdir of the dir you extracted the rar too. Then, go to start-admin tools-comp.management, then device manager. Find your sb live, and run the driver update wizard. Check "no, i want to install my own drivers" or whatever it says, then have disc, and point to the audio/drivers subdir the ctcomp.exe patched

Shovel you say you have updated to SP1 on XP, take a look in the

C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\

folder and compare the file sizes, creation date and last modified date to the afd.sys in C:\Windows\System32. If the one in the Service pack folder has an older date create a system backup (System Restore) and then boot into safe mode and replace the current driver (in System32) with the one in the ServicePackFiles folder.

Boot normally and see if this has made any difference...

Hope this helps

Nope, they're the same. I've seen rumours about the place that there is a patch for it, but there's nothing to be found from MS - and all the latest Windows Update updates have been installed. Tis very odd.

XP and Creative Soundcards dont mix. Dunno why but Creative have screwed my system so often I wonder why I keep buying them?

Right, well I downloaded those Kx drivers as an alternative and there may be some progress.

Basically I ran voice chat, and then clicked "stop" and it didn't kick up any fuss at all. However, for some inexplicable reason when you go to volume control there is no Microphone input so Messenger wont recognise it - defeating the object of the voice chat in the first place...

So errr, does anyone use them and know how to work them?
