OK, brand new build:

Specs:

AMD Duron 1300
Thermaltake Volcano 7+ Cooler
128 MB Crucial DDR266
Abit KD7 Motherboard
Abit Geforce 2 MX400
LiteOn CDRW
TEAC Floppy Disk drive
Windows XP Home

Right, this is Jo's new PC, boot floppy to run partition magic was fine, repeatedly. Install XP everything running smoothly. Fantastic I think. Go home (300 miles to Manchester...)

Jo has tried to transfer files to the shiney new box on floppy disk. As soon as the OS tries to access the floppy it freezes. No automatic restart, no error, just frozen. No Ctrl+Alt+Del either.

We can't even R-Click on the icon without it trying to access it - causing the same crash.

So, I'm stumped. Does anyone have any ideas why this happens - and more critically - how to fix it.

Thanks very much for your help.

Check for clashing IRQ's. :)

... chances are as it freezes only when the drive is being accessed something else is using the same irq. If it's not that, who knows.

OK.

One suggestion I've come across that we'll try later is the remove the drive from Device Manager then to search for it in Add New Hardware again. (Or just restart).

Aparently this will assign new IRQs to the device. I'm hoping that that will fix it anyway.

Maybe you got the lil ide cable the wrong way round, although I don't think it would pick it up at all (bios or win) if it was. Maybe it's just fucked.

We did have the cable the wrong way round - before we did the boot floppy. However, we turned that round to get that working.

I'll let you know what happens later :)

Right, we tried removing it and readding it but to no avail.

We removed the Floppy Disk Controller from device manager, this took out the Floppy Disk Drive entry too.

However, the same error remains.

Does anyone have any furthur ideas?
