I have downloaded the windows service pack 2 thing (for XP) and installed it. When my pc restarted, i lost all sound and net connection, and had to do a system restore to get it back working. Is sp2 borked, or do i have to change some settings once it has restarted??

Works perfectly here, can even play some games that didn't work pre SP2.
Dunno why it's causing so many problems for some people.

Out of interest, did you run WindowsUpdate frequently (and got the driver upgrades from there too?). It seems to fuck up if you're using very old drivers.

SP2 introduces a very silly bug with network shares, but other than that I haven't had too much trouble with it apart from going out of the way to disable all the new 'security' features I don't want 0.o

There is also a HUGE list of programs it doesn't work with.

It was terrible in beta, don't know how it got released.

Can give you a bigger list of programs that won't run on xp at all ;)

SP2 runs fine here, 2 machines patched, No trouble with either. But......

I have heard of some horror stories with it, And bare that in mind if you install it.

May Advice, Get latest sound drivers, latest Net card drivers. Install sp2 again and install the 2 drivers and see how it goes.

when I installed that thing it happily killed my Linux drive as well as the partition information of that harddisk...byebye to my 160GB drive.

installing Windows XP, then Linux and afterwards SP2 -> dead disk (tried it again just to be sure)

XP -> SP2 -> Linux works tho

good thing is, fresh XP installation always runs faster than one that's been in use for half a year ;)

Things that don't run are anything that uses directsound (reinstalled direct x, still didn't work), and anything that connects to the net (explorer, messenger etc) :)
Can't reinstall my net drivers, since i can never find an updated driver for my cable modem (made by Terayon, had it since i had cable 2 years ago)

SP2 working fine here but only problem I got is that the internet slowed down a bit. The download speed is as fast as before but loading images and websites seems to take a bit longer than pre sp2. Also I hate the new security features like it won't allow you to download files before you ignore the security message and some sites with activex elements wont load (before you ignore the security message). Does anyone know how I can turn off these security settings?

Also some other strange problem I got is that mostly on forums the pictures won't load (I'll get a red cross) but if I click with right mouse button and click on "show image" it will work then...Doesn't happen always but very frequently and only seem to happen on little images on forums (images that show the status of the topic). I didnt had it when I hadnt installed sp1, after sp1 I got this problem...I formatted my pc 1 week ago, installed sp2 and still same problem...I'm also running norton personal firewall, maybe that can cause the problem too but it won't matter if I disable my firewall the problem still excists.

Don't turn them off, complain at the site for their gimpiness. No site should use unsigned activeX controls, unless there's absolutely no other option.

look for a tool called 'XP Anti-Spy', current version is 3.9x.
Gives you alot of options, even for your internet connection.

First thing I did with SP2 was go into services and turn off Security Center, after I trned off the firewall and automatic updates.

Worked like a charm ;) :)
