Is it worth getting Windows 2000?

I'm gonna start rebuilding my rig fairly soon.

It will be:

C300A @ 450 (PIII 550 soon)
192MB RAM
6.GB HDD
SB Live
?? graphics card (suggestions)
and loads of other crap!
I use both Windows NT 4 and 98. (different machines)

dunno about windows 2000, but the graphics cards easy to say.

If you are planning to play tribes, Unreal, and UT, then get a v3, if you are going to play quake 3, quake 2, and other games, then get a tnt2, about 100 quid, and 60 fps average in q3, in 1024x768, in high detail etc etc. Is very fast in q3.

if u have more, get a geforce

Win2000 (which is really a renamed WinNT6) is probably only worth getting (assuming your only ever going to run one instance of Quake at any one time - which is basically everyone except server admins) if your are getting a system with more than 1 processor on it (as Win9x, AFAIK, doesn't support multiple processors, at least not well..)

Win2K will still not run ALL games however (though it runs more than NT4 did). The best option for me has always been to dual boot Win9x/NT.

I run games like UT, Tribes and QuakeX on NT and single player games in Win98. Also, it has the advantage that if you break one OS its handy to repair it/reinstall from the other OS.

I'm not into Dual booting at all..

I've decided that I'll get a student copy

£40 including another copy of 98

Hehe! Athlons - played with many I have... circa 750 and 800MHz ones
biggrin.gif
All are overclocked 500's but yea, they are quite fast. I can sort ya an 500@800MHz Athlon for 200 inc vat. Cheap really and fast as chuff
smile.gif
Although, for some reason me celly 366@605 is as fast as the test system at work with an 800MHz athlon in for q2 timedemo's in 1024*768 now i put 98SE on... Im gettin like 135fps in demo1 and demo2 in q2 with everything on cept in 16bit... crusher = 70fps which aint bad. DDR geforce BTW

Cool I may have to consider that. However I'll need another feckin motherboard!

Not sure, I'll definately be interested when I have some more money

I'd rather not be a student actually, I hate the final year etc. An I rather have more in my bank account. I've got IT jobs, not because I'm on a degree course, but because I know what to do.

Dump the 196mb ram and get 128 ECC plus a 25gb hdd with the saved dollar.

W2k is a renamed NT5, 98 doesnt support dual processor, and get an Asus Geforce 256 DDR.

Plus the current release of W2k is a beta, wait till the next release for the full version.

Im not 'buying' it till the 3rd release anyway, i never have and i never will, for obvious reasons.

U dont need ECC ram.. non-ecc is better for overclocking over standard rating too.

Asus geforces are expensive... I have a creative DDR and its plenty nippy!

ECC RAM is more future proof, if u want to overclock an Athlon ALOT.

100mhz Ram will fry at 150 (ish), unless cooled, or if your lucky.

66mhz ram will do 100 if cooled too.

But ECC will nearly do 200.

hmm u obv aint tweaked ure setup much if ure only getting 70fps for crusher on that uber rig. i get 74fps @ 1024x768, 16bit colour, max detail textures on a 300a @ 472.5, v3-2000 @ 180mhz. over 100fps for demo002 in q3 as well, not bad for a cpu costing £60 a yr ago and a £70 gfx card.

I dont know where u r gettin such info but no SDRAM out will be 200MHz FSB... u need like 5ns chips and no sdram (eec or not) has em - cost shitloads to make they would m8.

Another quick question for you lot.

How many of you are running SMP rigs?

As I'm not playing loads of games these days I thinking of also moving upto a Dual Celeron rig?

Dual 366 @ 550 job must be much better than my trusty 300A @ 450.

right, its easy, just get a p3 450, and some good 100 mhz memory, a geforce, and good mobo and that should be good.

my p3 450 runs fine at 600, cept graphics card does'nt like the high AGP bus, geforces are supposed to be good with high AGP buses, or you could just get a motherboard that has a different AGP divider.

But p3's are well good.

What batch is it that run at 600 then?

I've currently got an Abit BH-6 motherboard. That 450 will be on a 133 bus.

Right the other components that I've got

Generic 64MB PC100 RAM
SB Live
Cheap ass 2MB PCI graphics card.
Quantum HDD UDMA/33

For some reason I sold my TNT2U!

I put it down to women or it could be that clubbing streak in me reappearing!

Just get a dual celeron rig... powerleap have made FC-PGA socket to socket converters allowing you to use dual coppermine PIII's on yer BP6 in the future - makes for a fast machine!

I can soon get yer some 366's guaranteed to 550 for 69 ea. BP6 ~£99

The 366's I get often go to 583 or even higher anyway!
smile.gif
PIII 450's aint worth shelling out for... specially if u only have one in yer machine - lets face it - a single 600MHz CPU is slow these days

Cool! I'll have to raise some more cash.

Just about purchased a new mobile. One of those funky Nokia 8810 silver ones. Replace my Nokia 6110. Anyone had one of these?

Mind you cash is starting to get to my bank account these days as the girlie is being

Don't bother with win2k yet since there's no 3rd party driver support for anything on it...

We've got it at work, and, although it IS better than anything M$ have done before (faster and more efficient generally), it is actually ahead (support wise) of most 3rd party stuff.

eg. Our G400 w/dual monitor support won't support 2 monitors at the mo (not properly anyway, will only allow the 2nd monitor on the right).

There are a number of little issues that will be solved later by 3rd parties, but you'll have to wait a bit for them to catch up.

It does seem that Windows 2000 will be a mess. A read a feature on it recently, basically saying that, while it is "better" (more stable, fatser, runs Quake), its success depends apon what the drivers do. As Exo said, IF the 3rd parties can catch up, then there will be few problems, however, and lets face it, that wont happen straight away, and for some things, maybe never at all.

The problems aparently lie (mostly) with Grpahics card drivers, and D3D (yes, D3D, as created by MS.... DOH). If the drivers get up to date, then many more games will work. If Drivers/D3D stay compatible too, many more games will work. Whether it will or not, is anyones guess.

Other problems also exist with Sound Drivers too, similar kind of state, but may be more of a beta issue as no one is properly supporting it yet.

The most owrrying thing though, is Windows Millenium. 98 was SUPPOSED to be the last win 9x kernel OS. However, MS have now announce this new product, which is (suprise suprise) a Win 9x product. This suggests to me that actually, they are less confident about fixing it than we may have hoped.

I fear we may be in for a spring of dual booting my friends.

Beta my fucking arse
the current release is the final release.

The drivers are a tad messy, but i havent got a single device that doesnt work, or any game that doesnt work. Tomb raider 4 doesnt work tho, but i dont class that as a game.
I also bought windows 2000 proffesional for 110 pounds last night and am now running a perfectly legal, albeit my FIRST legal OS excluding the free Linux distributions.

Its great, all my fave games work and work well, the support for my sound card (sb live) and tnt2u are great, the speed and reliability are all there in abundance and i will say it is the best Windows (coff) yet.
Which is why i congratulated MS by handing them some of my cash for a well put together product that is helping bridge the gap between the win98 userbility and the winNT flexibilty and stability.
The driver support isnt top notch yet, but neither was NT4's at this time of its release. Be patient my young padowans, and you will learn

Quite.

Wait for the drivers, and then, no problems (hopefully).

However, I am still sceptical about the decision to bring out this Windows MM.... it is, well, a step back, and a sign of weakness. M$ wouldn;t step back and give people a chnace unless there was something badly wrong.
