Does anybody have any tips on Tweaking Windows2000, so it loads up a faster?

Currently, it takes upto maybe 1 and half minutes.. i have tweaked it once before, heres what i done..

Extract from TechSpot
Click on Start, Run, type in boot.ini & hit Enter (Should this fail manually locate & open the boot.ini in your bootable partition).

Find the line with Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional in it. It should appear something like this - multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect.

To disable the logo add the following command to it /noguiboot. A space should be left before adding this in, i.e. after modifying that entry it should appear as follows (Or similar) multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect /noguiboot. NOTE - This will also disable any error messages from appearing while loading Windows 2000 also, e.g. if a Hardware device causes a STOP error you will not be able to see what is causing it

Turn off all the services you don't need from the admin console

Did what the guy on the Forum said, after restarting Computer, i had a fright when the Internet didnt connect, so i had to go back into Services, and look for anything Internet Related, then i come across TCP/IP which i disabled (He said too :/) and it come straight back on...

Only problem was, it didnt really speed up my Computer, think it was roughly the same.

:(

Over a minute does seem rather long!!! SG what progs you got running at boot up?

If its Zone Alarm then that really slows ya comp boot time!

nah, dont run any firewalls (So keep away from me script kiddies ;) )

Things i have running at Startup are:

Messengers (Doubt they would cause slowing down)
EAX Movie Thingie-me-bob (Maybe this causes it..)
Abit Geforce Tweak thing
ADSL Green Icon Thingy
Norton Antivirus 2002 (This could be possible.. maybe its doing a scan of my HD?)

Norton takes a while to start up. If I were you I would disable all of these from loading at startup, just to see what difference it makes.

Do you really need all of those loading up every time you boot?

Norton would cause a longer boot time in 9x and ME casue it installs a DOS scanner :) But you are on 2000 so I doubt it will make much difference! I have way more booting up and yet its still faster :( You sure you have set in the bios to use Ultra DMA 100 or whatever yours is?

Right...

I went into Options of Norton AV, told it to not boot up on startup, then i went into my Messenger Program Properties, and told them not to boot up..

I close the EAX / Geforce Programs o they dont boot up again either..

So, Start > Shutdown, then i see that old Blue Screen (From a while back, remember it?) then it restarts .. ohh no, Dejavue..

Then it goes into Scandisk again :/

BUT, it did not solve the problem of it booting faster ?

BTW

Wheres the option in the BIOS to check if my HD is set to UDMA 100?

2k's boot sequence is not meant to be quick. It's not even meant to be turned on and off that much. If you really want that, use XP. Killing a few services and removing shite like Norton (Famous for breaking your PC when it's supposed to fix it, slowing it down and calling you shit while it's at it) will help a little, but not much.

Basically it's not meant for the "on and off to type a letter" users, so there is very little else you can do really : Except, if your hardware allows, use Hibernation when you want to turn off rather then shutting down : On hardware that supports this, it saves the RAM state to disk, and restores it on startup : It's certainly faster, but lots of hardware throws wobblies if you try it : notably any ASUScom networking stuff, some TV cards etc.

Try it, see.

Depends on the BIOS, check ya manual. In fact check and make sure all bios settings are correct ;) If they are then I guess u'll have to live with the long boot time! :(

Hmm, one of my Mates from college said that it could possibly do with the RAID stuff..

So, i go into the BIOS, and find "ATA100 RAID Controller", and itwas set to Enabled so i disable it, but it still took shit loads of time to boot up..

now thought, the ATA/Raid Controllers have disapeared from Device Manager (yay)
