2 PC's, 1 running win 98 Slow Edition, other running win 2k, NTFS drive. Problem is the pair of bastards will not see each other on the network, although they can ping each other from the command line. Ive tried all the usual crap, assigning ip's, 10 restarts, and all that bollocks. Any one any ideas?

Pretty obvious really.
can you play games over the pair? (i have the same setup btw) - if so the network is fine - what it is, obviously, is that windows 98 can not see NTFS file systems - so shared files on the win2k system are bugger all use - I havent actually tried this yet personally - but do a search on altavista for NTFS support for windows 98 - I do personally have it as a matter of fact - icq me # 25795645 - ill see if i can find it - i havent tried it, not sure if it will work over a LAN network - but it allows windows 98 to read and write to NTFS file system drives - I used it when i used to dual boot between 98 and 2000 (only running 2000 now though) - It might work over the lan, give it a shot, if not, gimme a shout on icq, ill see if i can help you further

ya wot? using NTFS makes no difference to whether or not the data can be shared to outside computers......

insh - i just remembered, try sharing a folder that isn't inside the 'Documents and Settings' folder...

i got 2 PCs, 1 Win2K and 1 Win98se...can see each other fine on net neighbourhood and access each others shared files blah blah blah

although, net neighbourhood is much better these days after i re-installed win98se on the other machine...hmmmmmm

LMAO!
sorry kryten buts thats complete tosh. Nuff said.

sorry but as mon says, its not a case of win98SE not seeing NTFS accross the network and Win2k Not seeing fatxx (?? !! )

if they were local drives then yes 98 wouldnt be able to see it. unless u goto www.sysinternals.com and get the NTFS disk reader for 98

if not goto www.winfiles.com and do a search for NTFS.

I have win2k, tho i havnt got it installed. waiitng for another hdd to appear.

But when i was using it i found it a complete pain in the arse to share! its something to do with the security settings of the network (if memory serves). if i had it in front of me i would tell you. Unless anyone else can tell u exaclty where the settings are then goto www.ntfaq.com and either search the FAQ or go onto the discussion area and ask the question. tho i would advise lookin at the previous answers as it may well be in there.

also make sure that IP is set as the defualt protocal... on both machines. had it before where one machine was trying to use ipx and the other IP. also make sure both are using Logon to microsoft networks, and that the workgroups are the same ( not needed i know, but it`d be helpful to get a standard going)

if u still get stuck, ill clean one of my hdd`s down and get it installed and working. then i can tell ya

email me if ya want

Make sure file sharing is enabled.
Make sure both machines are in the same workgroup.

Win 2k network update.

Thanks for all the replies, i got it sorted about 10 mins after postin my 1st message. It was just Windows been arsey, all i did was ripped out all of the network settings(protocols, file and print sharing and all that crap) from the win 2k machine, and put them back in again, although id already done this bout 4 times already, the last time it worked.
Win 2k can see FAT 32 drives and copy files no problem.

So far win2k seems fine, the networking side seems better than 98(once u get it going),and you can throw alot more crap at it can u ever could with 98 before it falls over, only pisser ive had is the upgrade option is toss, it seems to have a built in failure ratio of 2 fuked up machines for every 3 attempted upgrades.

Also theres no D3D support for Voodoo 2's, mind u whos still got 1?

Best bet is back all yer crap up b4 trying to upgrade, then if it works yer on a winner, if not yer lost nuffin and you start from scratch, arrrh the joys of fdisk....

Anyway, thanks again for your help every 1.

bye

I never said win2k cant see fatxx volumes - course it can, simple backward compatibilty

i have personally not been able to get my win98 comp to see anything on my win2k comp ?? Either way, my networking knowledge is in the NOWT dept so i wont complain there

Win 98 cannot see ntfs drives, cus its crap, im not bothering to try and patch 98 up to see them cus to be honest i have no need to (win 98 pc holds all the files i need and has internet connection). My networking knowledge is crap as well Kryten, due to the fact that im at the latter end of completing a HNC Networking course

....the pubs nice and cheap though.

Im going to chuck a Linux box in there as a firewall,(should be interesting, i know fuk all bout Linux, apart from its scarier than DOS), in preparation for the perminent connection (ha) offered by the mystical cable CODEC, that is when ever Telewest can be arsed dropping the fibre in.

Bye

WHAT!???????!

DOS is the nicest thing EVER!
its far simpler than winblowz

anyway, Linux is a mix between command line, AND a GUI. so u gotta piss around for fucking AGES to get it sorted.

And, i FINALLY got the full version of (originally named) Fat32 for NT (by sysinternals).

I got a machine running NT server 4, W2k, win98 and Linux (RH 6.1), piece of piss when u have done it a couple of times..

The reason that win 98 cannot see NTFS drives is that is the whole point. A Feature and not a problem, otherwise fat is the option for complete compatibility.
Although i would presume that anyone would want to have the security permissions on NTFS.

Also the security of the hard drive has no effect if you are networking, its the share that will make a difference.
