Problem:

I have two computers, each running Windows 2000 Pro. I have 2 Lan cards, [Etherent GE2500III SE-2 10mb/s] and a big long cable 20m, I have installed cards and connected them together. Both cards are recogninsed in Windows 2000 and a LAN connection has been setup in 'Dial-up networking connection' folder. The only problem is I can't get the computers to communicate in 'My Network Places' it only shows the local computer in on both computers. I have set up file sharing on both comps, but can't seem to acces the other computers files or printers.

I need help desperately I've checked Microsoft site but no luck. Can anyone please help me set up file sharing and printer sharing properly?

Silly question, but are you sure you are using a crossover cable?

If it's co-ax, make sure you have terminators at the end, or it wont work. The cable should go into a T piece, which has the computer at the bottom, the cable on one end, and a terminator on the other.

/me adds to the obvious wrong cable comments

You need to use a cross over cable :)
