Sooooooooooooooo, who went out and bought it then, some q's for yah all :p

1) Is it really any good for gaming? Have drivers been sorted, how many of the games does it run now, what is the D3D situation.
2) Is it worth the £150 UPGRADE fee? where normal 9x updtes were now more thna £80.
3) Should we wait for Win 9x millenium instead?

Ta!

1) Yes if you can set it up right and dont start moaning like so many poor llamas i have to deal with saying WIN2k SUX COCK etc
2) 150 quid? roflol - cost you 100 for the oem version at most places - and thats a small price to pay for an OS as stable as NT with 9x compatibility
3) Lol no

Been playing with W2K for a few days now. Started off with no intention of moving off Windoze 98, but after finding all the right drivers (Geforce, Sound, PCTV, WinDVD, etc, etc) everything runs fine ! With games, the only ones I have loaded are Quake3, TOCA 2, Unreal Tournament, Janes WWIIF, and they all run fine. They even appear a little faster in W2K, but the main thing it seems rock solid. Not had one crash yet, even with beta drivers (thats a kiss of death job).

Well impressed so far.

Bids.

Sounds good - so what would I need to qualify for the "Student" offers (eg Win 2k upgrade version for about half the price and cheap MS office etc etc).

Is 16 old enough to get this? or is there some other clause to stop you saving me money????

I looked at MS Student offers when I was at University. It seems MS has a con for you. You pay your money and then when you've finished your course they hit you with another fee to bring the software up to full version. Not good ... don't know how they do it ... maybe you have to register the software for X amount of years... Anyone use MS Student offers?

With thanks

I've used the student offer (when my lad was at college). I got a box with a form to fill in (which had to be signed by a tutor). I sent the form off, and got my software a week later. Never heard from them again!

As the offer also applies to tutors, it's unlikely that Microsoft would be pursuing people for full payment.

If you've got kids at school (or any educatoinal institution...5 years old up), you can use this offer. If you have a brother or sister at school, get your parents to take it up for you

hmmmm, so in theory, if its true that it is a genuine offer - I could buy Win 2k upgrade for 40 quid, in the name of my 8 year old sister

)))))

I'm liking this :Þ

I had better look it up I suppose

Look in one of the mags at one of the big software houses' adverts, or their websites. They usually have a bit explaining what the pre-requisites are.

Just wonderin, for some reason win2k has started failing to boot occasionally due to a corrupt file allegedly, has anyone any idea what I should do to deal with it? I can't find the error anywhere but somtimes I have to reboot 3 or 4 times to get to the damn desktop.....

Which makes me think it isn't just gremlins....

(This, unfortunately is the kind of question I post when microtoss tech support ignore my emailz)

c'mon ppl, HELP!

i don't know if this is your problem, but it may be an issue for some gamers here, so i'll note the following point about installing win2k:

do everything in your power to do a fresh, clean, wipe and spit-shine the hard drive install. this means back up all your data files to a zip drive or second drive or whatever, and when you install, don't upgrade. reformat the hard drive as a ntfs partition and install everything from scratch.

two reasons for this. first, the upgrade isn't known to work terribly well. second, ntfs is a very high quality filesystem that will save you from a lot of system file corruption problems that under win9x would require a reinstall. and no more of that scandisk crap when the computer accidentally gets shut off without going through a shutdown, either. it will improve your system's stability significantly.

Hi, just a few things:

i read in a magazine that W2k was more of a resource-hog than any of the other windows versions - has any Windows 2000 user noticed a slowdown is game performance becuse of this. i was considering trying out Linux because apparently it uses much less resources than windows, but it doesn't have all the apps that windows does like getright and icq, that make life easier. Also last time i checked there were no OpenGL drivers for my TNT
