Long one...

Got an athlon 850 replacing a 400 celery, now using an abit kt7 mobo (non raid one). Anyway, installed it, booted win2k, starts loading, bet a bsod showing unreachable boot device. OS is on d:, altho I assume it must have added something to my c:. New install writes to the c: as well as installing to d:, but c: has been reformatted coz win2k couldnt read it when I first tried to reinstall. Reinstall locks up configuring com+ or networking, clean install does the same. Anyone know of any issues with kt7's and win2k? Any help gratefully received, not that I'm expecting many replies :) Config below

AMD Ath 850
KT7 mobo
256 mb pc100
c: - 20GB udma
d: - 10gb udma
e: - 5gb eide
f: - cdrw
sblive
geforce2 gts
realtek 10/100 nic
pci isdn ta
worlds biggest orbs heatsink ;)

ok well here's an unexpected reply then =p

unreachable or inaccessable boot device means w2k can't get to your harddrive on it's own. this means it either needs a w2k driver for [say] a udma66 controler/raid device or that the drive w2k is trying to boot to is formatted with a filesystem w2k doesn't understand.

a w2k install twice locking up during network configuration implies [we assume w2k is always right] that there is a problem there. Look at your pc when it boots, and check that your ta and the realtec don't [for instance] share an interupt. Also go into your BIOS and set "plug and play os" to "no". This will force the bios to configure your system fully and give that information to the os.

My advice:

1)use fdisk and delete all your partitions, then make em anew.
2)dl the latest true w2k drivers for every single thing you have in your pc and have them ready [on floppys] to install.
Don't use w2k's own drivers as they might be older/buggier than the ones available on the internet.

good luck

If u are using the UDMA 66 ide ports u need to load the Highpoint driver as 2k is setup. Otherwise 2k wont bother getting out of bed.

Nah, thankx for the help guys, but it's still fux0red. Will remove everything but the vga card, and install it piecemeal (hours... oh goooooooooooooood), see if that works. If not, back to 98 :(

Isdn card was in pci 3 - shared resources with udma controller. moved it, it all worked. More by luck than judgement? NEVER :)

Ta for your input...
