Win XP fresh install, Abit KT7 RAID

raaaaaaaargh.

I've been awake since 12am last night trying to install xp. Had problems thanks to my Highpoint raid thing, the f6 option to install a third party scsi/raid device got me half way but it crashed in setup. Then I put my main hard drive on a standard ide channel, installed it there and it worked fine. I installed the drivers afterwards, bing, other drives appear. Put the C: back on to the raid, bing, loads.

Slight problem, as SOON as I installed the highpoint drivers from the abit site, winxp stopped shutting down properly. It just hangs just as it's about to switch off/reboot. It's very VERY frustrating.

Anyone got any ideas? If anyone does and is on IRC, can you message me (I'm on as nath) cos I wanna sort this soon. I'm really quite narked :|

TIA

Yep, I had tremendous problems with my kg7 raid and xp...kept having to stick in the driver disk every time xp rebooted....I didnt have your problem tho...I'm on hpt370 and I used the drivers that came with my mobo - hotrod 100 pro version 1.4 (stupid name!)...afaik there arent any xp drivers so I used the win2000 ones.

Did you install your mobo drivers manually ? (dont trust xp...pppfffff) worth a try.

And have you a firewire card ? some interfere with acpi and block shutdowns ?

Right, been giving this some more thought for you Nath.

I would suggest the next port of call would be ACPI?

If you have the patience, disable it (or choose a different ACPI mode) and then reinstall. I am making the assumtion that since ACPI is involved in switching the thing "off" (or as close as it gets these days), it is presumably involved in rebooting as well.

It's a painful process, as you have to reinstall every time, and if you really want ACPI working in your installation, you may wish to just try poking for solutions rather than spending time reinstalling. Having said that, it could narrow down the problem devices if it *did* work.

Sod reinstalling, that'd take FAR too long and I think I'd lose more data. I might have a look for ACPI in the bios, see if there's anything silly in there. Not sure what else to do :|

*Idea!*

Boot to safe mode (press F8 during start up for the full menu and select it).

Then try rebooting. See what happens. Naturally with safe mode being barebones, it might help gather that it's deffo an advanced driver issue.

Oh, and though this may be sacralige... email MS tech support. There's a web form you can do it from, you pump in your product id and fill it all in. You need to log in with a passport though.

Why suggest this? I've been having a very friendly and quite constructive exchange with one of their techies over a few bits of set up, there was a fairly prompt reply (within 2 days, say 1 day), and when I didn't reply to the latest email, I got another one today to check up if I'd had any success. I'm actually impressed :)

They can have a tendancy to just spew out MS Knowledgebase articals, but if you check the artical and then say "no, that's not quite what I've got", you discover that there are real people manning it who seem to know what to do.

Seriously, there's nothing to lose :)

Sorry - I'll go outside an whip myself for that now.

Yeah I know they're good, my dad has called them before.

Unfortunately I am no longer on XP, I tried to burn a dvd and my pc crashed. Every time.

I got angry, formatted and stuck 2k back on.

Hurray! No more hanging at shut down!

Boo! DVD's still don't work?!?

Oh *fu..dge* (well, I know jonty'll edit it anyway)

I have no idea what to do now, I'm at my wits end and I've made a small hole in the partition wall thanks to a full bottle of water being chucked at it. My buffy poster will cover it only for so long :|
