Win 98, internet sharing, LAN parties, and LPBing

for those of you who haven't tried it yet, win 98 se has a feature called internet connectivity, whereby 2 or more PC's on a network can share an internet connection. I tried this last weekend with a mate, connecting to BW over a 64k link. Now I normally get a ping of around 60-80 so I was expecting this to drop to about 140 when 2 were connected, but there was no drop off. Both of us connected with a ping of about 60. Similarly downloading speeds increased. I normally get 6.5 to 7k per second download, but between the two, downloading from different sites, I managed 10k a second - does anyone know why this would happen? And has anyone tried more people connecting through this and what's the sort of knock-on affect for more people connecting.
The questions are because i'm going to throw a small lan party for mates in a few weeks and i'll have 8 pc's connected on a 100Mb ethernet lan. I want to connect all 8 through this feature and i'm just a bit weary of the trade off. I can go to 128k link so this may help a bit. Anyone got any experience of this?
P.S. It's a doddle to set up as well.
and just to tag at the end, the CTC Clan Lucky-Pluckers! site is now up and running with new sexy interface. www.lucky-pluckers.freeserve.co.uk

Yup, your ping shouldn't really go up by much, but I think you are prob limited to 2 or 3 people per 64k channel.

Hmm, that's the first thing I tried when I installed Win98SE. I could connect via either machine to a server, but the modem lights would just pulse. I could see myself on the server via Gamespy with an enormous ping (oo-er), but no joy in actually getting the game up and running.

Has anybody out there used the modem sharing of SE and got it to work with Q2? I'm not bothered about the ping going up a smallish amount, I'd only be running one PC at a time, not both. I'm more interested in the technical aspects of it all...

Sad innit?

Yeah Quake 2 rocked.- i primarily set this up for Quake 2 and i've tried it with 3 people now. On a 64k line, apart from various spikes, we all had a ping of about 80-100, which was nice.
I don't really have any advice to give though. We just set it up, made sure we could ping each other (winipcfg) then connected. Two were running Win 98 SE, one on first release of 98 - no problems at all. All pc's were connected by a hub to a workgroup on an ethernet LAN using IP. I had 5 machines on the network, but only 3 dialing out.

Before win98 I used the proxy function in kali and nowadays use MS proxy server to achieve multi web links.

Unfortunatly pinging is not a true test unless you all pinged at exactly the same time. The fact is you are sharing a line and any concurrent activity will have to share the link or wait until there is some spare bandwidth. I have found that once 4 or more users are on it becomes unworkable for games.

But its a cool means to download patches or run a webcam at a lan party. I'm running a 35 player lan on the 24th Sep near Andover/stonehenge if anyone is interested. Details are at http://www.roweb.co.uk

Luck!
