Wii Connection help

I got a Wii yesterday and I want to know how to connect it up to my broadband so i can download stuff on it.

I have DSL broadband and the pc is upstairs and the Wii is downstairs so theres no way of connecting it is there?

Right, in my modem there is only 2 slots, phone cable slot and power cable, now where would this router go?

Usually it goes like this:

ethernet cable 1 from modem to router + ethernet cable 2 from router to the PC the router will be installed on.

After that it's simply a case of switching the Wii on and let it find a connection once done you're hooked up and ready to go.

I know fuck all about what connections the wii's got but if it's ethernet then you need to run an ethernet cable to your pc's network card and use Window's own "internet connection sharing" (there's a wizard within your Network Connection folder) to let it use your pc's connection. Buying a wifi router will be a waste of money since you'll need the pc to be on anyway.


A better long term solution is buying a wifi modem/router (i.e. a router with a built in modem; netgear etc). For this you'll need to make sure the wii's able to connect wirelessly. If your pc's near the phoneline anyway since you appear to have a usb modem of some sort to get online then you'll just need to ditch the modem and run an ethernet cable to the wifi modem/router.

You need to buy a wireless router specifically for either ADSL or cable. The white netgear ones seem to be reasonably priced and well respected in terms of getting the job done.

It is insanly easy to setup, router has instructions, just plug your modem into the router and connect the router to your main pc.

Mine worked first time, but the manual should guide you through setup.

Wii is built in wireless, you just need to enable the wireless radio on the router and set up access control to stop other people using it.

You do not need your main PC on to use the connection, you only need the main PC to access the router if you want to change settings.

Yeah I bought the white Netgear one, i plugged my modem into the router then pc into the router.

The Wii then requires you to enter the passwords you supplied to the router and
bobs your uncle. I dont have to leave my computer on just the modem and the router because the pc is effectively plugged into the router.

Oh and i made a terrible mistake today, i brought a cable router so when i got home i realised that the plugs didn't fit into it! So back to PCworld tomorrow for a refund and new one

yeah but as far as I am aware Netgear is a decent enough make in the router market

Got the BT one in the end, didn't take long to set up and its a great connection, would highly recommend it if anyone is looking to buy an ADSL wireless router
