Mainstream HD broadcasts will be with us in less than 10 years, quite far off I know, but SKY have plans for a HD movie channel beginning soon. Worth thinking about.

Well, look at it from this perspective - within 5 years HD DVDs and digital transmissions could be very popular. I know you're not planning to spend a fortune, but just bear in mind that you might well choose to upgrade in a few years, and money saved now is well spent in future.

As regards pricing, don't be afraid of haggling in the shops. I always do, and I always get a reduction. If one shop won't offer it, I just leave and goto another. The other thing about ordering from a shop is that its much easier if you have problems to take it back and get a refund, or a replacement. I've never ordered something so expensive online, but it seems to me that those price reductions will in some part reflect the quality of afterservice you get. Mind you, don't buy from Comet, they just suck anyway.

Don't most people update their tvs every 3 or 4 years? If this is the case then Ch3t can spend the money now and later :).

I must be odd as I have had no issues with Comets service since buying my TV from them :).

We got our 32" widescreen from www.unbeatable.co.uk
They were pretty good after I bitched at them for not telling me there'd be a delay. They knocked off the delivery charge.
At the time we were on a bit of a budget so we didn't bother with the TV stand and just put it on a heavy coffee table (I know). But more recently we decided enough was enough and I phoned them up. They still had our purchase on record and got a stand to me with a few days. I'd recommend them.

Empire Direct

Had a few things from them myself and I know a few other people who have, although I dont order it online just go round to there warehouse still same thing :)

Although there are a few people if you search online who have had bad experiences with them, but none of my friends and family haven't. They tend to be about the cheapest or near enough in the UK as well.

One other point they are like a lot of online retailers and will say they stuff in stock when they dont as they could be rellying on the suppliers warehouse stock.

Rule is if you want the TV guaranteed delivered in a week go with Currys / Comet else go with Empire etc.

/Edit: Just been comparing like for like and the 'TV and Video Direct' is cheaper on those manufacturers.

Remember that John Lewis Price match...and they give you a 5 year guarantee as well.

Thats what I did when I bought my TV.

richer sounds do cheap tellys too, but under no circumstances left them talk you into a demo of plasma/lcd tv, seriously when they had pioneer plasmas screen i was tempted to go down the street and rob the bank.
