Businessman spends £42,000 on a round of drinks
A businessman picked up a bar bill of more than £42,000 after he went on a spending spree at a London nightclub.
The man asked for the music to be switched off in Brown's Club in Covent Garden in order for him to declare that he was buying everyone a drink.
The German-born Spanish fruit importer said the gesture was to celebrate the 30th birthday of the club owner, Richard Traviss. He promptly went round the tables taking orders, paying in the end for a bill totalling £42,608.25 - including a tip of £4,734.35.
A spokeswoman for the club said the bill was thought to be the biggest to be met by one person in any restaurant or bar in Britain.
She said 200 people at the members-only club were present when the man announced his spending spree.
She said he had asked to be anonymous - and his credit card receipt would not be released. But the club was making a list available of the drinks he bought.
His girlfriend, who was present, told people that he was known for similar generosity at clubs in Paris and Ibiza.
The drinks included buying Mr Traviss 40 bottles of £250 Cristal champagne for his 30th birthday at a cost of £10,000, 49 bottles of £325 Cristal Rose for punters for a total of £15,925, 20 bottles of £120 Bollinger at £2,400, 20 Baileys shots costing £140 and 20 Sambuca shots also costing £140.
The bill also included 27 bottles of Jack Daniels at £86.50 a bottle, 21 bottles of Moet Rose at £90 a bottle, 11 bottles of Moet at £70 a bottle and 21 Martell brandies at £6.50 a drink.
