Awesome video

He's doing wrist locks. The uki has to jump over the wrist lock to unwind from it otherwise the wrist will simply snap. You learn this technique from white belt.

What Lamp said. If you don't move, you end up with a wrist in several pieces...it may not look it, but the locks being applied are excruciatingly painful. Locks and control holds are usually designed to jam nerves against bone, doing no actual damage but forcing the nerve to produce its maximum pain signal. Watch that film at 0:55, where the guy taps out; I've had that lock applied in the dojo and it's absolutely agonising. You don't tap out in proper training unless you mean it.

Seagal's made some appallingly bad films, but he actually does know his Aikido. Aiki tends to have less cowboys and testosterone cases in it then some other martial arts, and they don't let you proclaim yourself a 7th. dan if you really aren't. The very smooth, graceful flow of the movements you see there - particularly against the multiple attackers - is characteristic of Aikido. If there's one martial art I would like to study, it's Aikido.

Yeah, aikido is a funny MA. Especially since you're just "avoiding being hit and step aside" if the police asks.

When you get your wrist bent by an aikido guy, 7th dan sensei non the less, you'll triple backflip with a twist too :)

That would be an interesting matchup...Gracie's basically just a grappler, he depends entirely on his choke-holds. Watch his UFC fights - he wins most of the time if he can get his crab-like lock on and hold it, but I've seen people break out of it and he actually has very poor offence - he mainly waits for an opening in what's incoming and tries to work his favourite lock hold in. He basically gets one lock on and hopes he can tough it out as the opponent struggles to get out of it; it's effective in its way, but a very one-dimensional way to fight and also excruciatingly boring to watch.

There's entirely too much mystique built up around the Brazailan Ju-jutsu people, like there's some mystical secret there - there isn't. Yes, the Gracie family have been very successful in competitive martial arts, but - again, IMO - I don't consider them to be especially talented martial artists, more like well-trained prizefighters. I suspect a high-level Oriental Ju-jutsu master would completely school one of the Gracies every time.

I suspect against an Aikido expert, a Gracie would be hard-pressed to ever get that lock on in the first place. And end up in some locks they didn't expect themselves, ones that no amount of toughing it out would work to escape from. You'd have a style that depended totally on locking up and resilience against an art that is the master of never getting pinned down or locked up in the first place.

Chuck "The Fuck" Norris would beat everyone, but he's so powerful no normal person's body can withstand the training!
