why bother including a hdd at all tbh. sony could prolly half the price, and let consumers choose from any number of bare 2.5 hdds which wot ever size they need tbh.

also they prolly wana one up ms with begger hdd than 360 at retial, also playtv is not far away

Because it costs too much (read, hits their margin points). Yet they are happy to charge a similar price for the 160gb edition as the 60gb edition. Lets face it HD drive costs are minimal. Sony and MS both need to realise that the consumers know this.

I doubt they could half the pice by not including a HDD, I'm sure they have put a bit of a markup on the HDD but it wouldn't come down to £150 is they removed them.

I think Sony's view would be that anyone who wanted backward compatibility had that option for the first 18 months of the console's life and not that many people care. I bought a 60GB but backwards compatibility has proved far less useful than having card readers on board (its often faster to transfer a tv show from my PC to a memory stick and play direct off that than mess about with TVersity etc, although I've now found a USB stick into the USB port works just as well). Also, if you want a bigger Hard disk, its easy to DIY with the PS3 anyway.

I assume this hard disk upgrade is purely to prepare for playtv and they're finally getting their act together with PSN, so we might actually need some hard disk space soon (not that I'm going to buy playtv; a BTVision box does the job just as well for less money and it works with Slingbox, whereas playtv will probably only work with locationfree).

there is the odd rumour going round that soon may add ps2 games for download much like how psn has ps1 games.

I've seriously considered getting a PS3, and if they find a way to let me play Tekken Tag, Ico and Shadows of the Colossus then I'll defo get one. Until then I'm not so sure.

I have the Tekken that was released for the psp on my ps3. It was on special offer for a fiver or so on PSN when the console launched. Its great.

I do not think it will be long before PSN has ps2 games for download, they need to compete with Ninty and MS in this area.

I have to say the 80gb ps3 is good value for £299, especially as it comes with the dualshock controller

A few guys at work have modded there system (now out of Warranty) with bigger drives, apparently there are videos on ze internetz (youtube?) on how to replace the hard drive/increase capacity. Perhaps Sony should have thought about the mistakes of the 360 and downloadable content....

lol

you do not void the warranty when you replace the hdd:) they just ask you keep the orignal hdd should any thing go wrong and they need to replace the ps3 for you. and why would you need a guide showing how to upgrade? just pull the tab out, then the hdd caddy, unscrew it and its open

I've not tried it myself and was going on information I was told. :twak:

With most the demo's being 1-2GIG they do need to start increasing the drive space though ;)

This constant revamping bullshit from Sony is a large part of the reason that I've not picked up a PS3. Until they release the equivalent "slimline" version, they're just going to keep fucking about.
