Some of the replies on here are truely comical, even ones from ppl who claimed to have played thanes for long periods of time.
Thanes have the same HPs as Skalds, Shamans, Healers, etc, but not quite as many as Warriors when unbuffed. IMHO, Dorfs make the best Thanes due to the extra con and natural body/thrust resists, Norse also make good Thanes, but Trolls arent as good due to the lower Dex/Qui and the fact that they end up over the str cap when fully buffed.
Thanes are a melee/caster hybrid, any thane who doesnt take capping Piety seriously is gimping themselves. A Thane with capped Piety can outdamage a Suppression RM using spells alone, added to that they can actually do some serious damage in melee also. Mjollnir is great in keep attacks for clearing walls and AOEing gates. I always give thanes a PoC buff to help their power regen because I expect them you use their spells when appropriate.
Mjollnir has very good aoe damage rate and if used correctly can make a huge difference in RvR. For example, last week 1fg CE with 2 thanes (Rolf & Norvindus) flattened 3 seperate hib guild groups within a 10min period using stun+AOE, and before you say they were crap hib groups, one was Vengeance with all RR5+.
Not all groups have a shaman with them, let alone one that caps out on the specline buffs, so the str/con buff next patch will be useful, far more than the current str only buff.
No other Mid tank is better suited to defend casters than a shield spec Thane, they can cast DDs at the enemy while they are at distance and then slam+melee if they get close. Thanes are the best tanks for keep attacks/defence.
Thanes are currently a little under par but the changes in the next patch will bring them back up to par. Only minor problems I see then with Thanes are that they should have Evade1 like all other hybrid tanks, and should have access to some of the caster RAs like MCL.
Thanes arent gimped, just some of the people that try to play them are. They are the hardest Midgard tank class to master and there are only a handful of people around that have managed it.
