I'm after some new speakers for my PC...

Which ones would you recommend? Be resonable with the budget...

I'm currently on an AWE64 value, and I thinking of going to the SB Live.

Cheers

Well ive just brought some Creative CSW100's (3 piece - satillites and sub).

They are OK... but me needs a new sound card first before i can really judge em... im using a wank yamaha POS at the mo... getting vortex 2 card soon... Anyway, they were 41 inc vat and delivery from www.smcdirect.co.uk

I REALLY wanted some Altec Lansing ACS48's but nowhere in the UK sells the bastards... so i just got the creatives as they review ok and were cheap...

goto www.reviewfinder.com and search for speakers or whatever... that might help ya a bit.

Altec Lansing speakers - I've been after these for some time and this thread spurred a new web search ...

MJM Computers sell them. Rumour has it that Software Warehouse do them also.

According to MJM, Altec have updated their range and so new stock is expected soon. They couldn't give me a price on ACS48s. Their sales guy basically told me that Altec Lansing speakers were expensive and overrated, he recommended CL or Yamaha.

I would if my Hi FI wasn't

a) On the other side of the room.
b) So big
c) hooked up to the TV
d) Hooked up to a pair of technics and a mixer

Trust me i'd love to run it through my hi fi rig!!

I'm thinking about getting a cheap external AMP and a set aof Gale mini monitors.

See ya

heh i was gonna run mine through me hifi aswell... but its kinda at a dodgy angle to me comp so the stereo effect in games would be somewhat fugged up
smile.gif

But me gonna get rid of loads of bollox in me room and hook it up anyway on the rear channel of me sound card and have home speakers firing directly behind me. (Tis a decent system)

Mikey, ya a good idea u got there... a 2nd hand, decent quality, low power amp would suit the gale speakers well... kewl system for a mediocre PC

Tell you what - Used to have a set of Altec Lansing speakers and sub system, they were VERY nice sounding, until my kid bro inserted a kitkat wrapper in the holes in the sub
frown.gif

Im now using a set of Creative Labs FPS1000 speakers, thats 4 speakers and subwoofer
The speakers are the size and weight of cricket balls, but they sound crisp, clear, and bassy with the sub at the right level, at low distortion rates. For the size, and price (around 50 quid) they are a top set for the budget wallet - I keep seeing shit 2 speaker+sub systems at 70 quid and i piss myself laughing at the quality compared to my little babys
smile.gif

I also back that set up with a pair of Logic 3 Maxim 250's - they are the height of my 17" screen and bloody loud+bassy - Sound quality isnt too sharp but i use them for the volume

my speakers are same as the FPS1000's but just have the 2 sat's instead of 4... sound OK but once u r used to big home systems the creatives are a bit 'minimal'... but good for the price. Didnt go with the FPS1000's as me got no room for MORE speakers in ere... altogether im counting 6 pairs and a sub... the total number of actual drivers = 21 (I think u get the idea of a BIG home system now

all i have to say is SEPARATES
i have 2 wall mouted and 2 floorstanders, 160 mm driver units in all of em, good old amp, chucking out about 500 watts rms all in all, and the sound is supurb, crisp bass, crisp treble.
get separates, way better.

I've seen a SB Live 1024 + FPS 1000 speaker bundle including Alien vs Predator for £65 so I will probably go with that for now.

But I hear what you are saying with regards to SEPARATES. Yeah I know they are brilliant cause my main hi-fi rig is SEPARATES all the way. It rocks, although I need a sub for some more bass! When I got my speakers Gale 4 I wasn't into the dance scene like I am now.

Space is also sort of an issue. I can fit another hi-fi rig easily, but can I fit it properly with decent stero separartion. Bit tougher that one. Mini monitors, JPW, Gale etc. is what I ultimately head for.

ok try and work this out.
each of the speakers can take about 150 watt peak ok.
the amp has four independantly driven outputs, hence the four speakers. It peaks at about 75 watt per channel, rated on four ohm speakers. MY speakers happen to each be four ohm. Half the ohmage double the sound output, 75 x 2 = 150 watt, per channel.
150 x 4 = 600 watts about, but it varys.
all this is done in RMS, as rms is the only true wattage standard.

Right, trying to grasp what you are saying here....

each speaker is running 75 watts per channel right? So thats 300w total. Its a fact that not many old amps run 300w rms, 300w pmpo maybe but not rms... And if you insist its RMS then i very much doubt its measured at say .1% THD... 10% maybe and if so its an inaccurate reading cuz it takes into account masses of distortion to equal the total measured output.

MY speakers happen to each be four ohm. Half the ohmage double the sound output, 75 x 2 = 150 watt, per channel.
150 x 4 2= 600 watts about, but it varys.
all this is done in RMS, as rms is the only true wattage standard.

1stly, what r u on about m8... halving the ohmage?? four 4 ohm speakers on four channel 4 ohm amp = 4 ohm kinda output... The only time u half ohmage is when running speakers in 'bridgeable' mode - i.e. using 2 channels for 1 speaker. U got that bit but u aint running that mode are ya...

True - RMS is the only reliable way of measuring power output, but 'the only true wattage standard' is a bit sketchy quite simply because output doesnt only depend on power... speaker sensitivity plays a major part...

For those of you still on the lookout for Altec Lansing Speakers.

I just spoke to someone in Carrera Systems who tells me they have Altec Lansing speaker sets for sale. For the three-piece sets; the ACS45.1 (12W/20W) is £45 +VAT and the ACS48 (20W/40W) is £72 +VAT. They charge £10 for delivery.

Trouble with MS Speakers is that they are USB, so no CD output, I don't think?

Mind, you don't need a soundard for it.

I may be wrong though.

In fact they've probably updated them...
